Idolized

Don’t know nothing ‘bout this, having never watched the show, but folks are buzzing about last night’s American Idol upset http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2009/may/21/viewers-make-arkansan-an-unexpected-idol/

I know OTV, won’t be pleased by this turn of events. Anyone else surprised?

I hate these shows - absolutely hate them. Did you hear that OctoMom is being pursued by *several* stations to pay her big bucks so we can watch her mangle all her offspring? Makes me GAG.

Well said JeanieS.We’ve witnessed the same thing happen in political elections over the past few years.Absolutely unbelievable.

I think I’ll get over it rather quickly. I only ever watched the show for the first time ever last week and was being semi-sarcastic rooting for Adam. Although I do think he should have won.

“American Idol” bores me.I like my reality shows to be trashy and mind-numbing. “Daisy of Love” and “New York Goes to Work” are two recent faves. It’s such mindless entertainment full of shallow people and isn’t that what TV is supposed to be about?
I can’t wait for the Octo-mom show, I’m thrilled by the idea.

I’ve said it before, the only thing worse than bad TV is people on their high horse crowing about how so above watching bad TV they are. Be honest, y’all have guilty pleasures too.

I didn’t/don’t watch the show, so I don’t know who won, but I did watch them sing “We are the Champions” (Queen) on YouTube this morning after being directed by a co-worker, and I must say, if that Adam guy didn’t win, then the whole thing is rigged beyond belief. That dude totally blew away the other guy during that song. The ‘other’ guy’s voice was lame and weak on a song that required a lot of power. Adam had the power and feeling behind his voice that the other guy didn’t. Simple as that.

Adam was a veritable reincarnation of glamtastic Freddie Mercury. He would be a much better front man for Queen than Paul Rodgers is currently, he’d glam it up, costume it up, and cause us to weep fiercely at his perfect theatrical recreation of Mercury the Great.

So, just read that American Idol viewers voted for the “other guy.”

    Lame.

    Rigged.

And, if the viewers of AI really DID vote for the other guy, then they’re all, the lot of them, tin eared bafoons and mindless morons.

    Sorry.

I know, “that toadman.. what a freakin elitist.” But hey, I’m picky where music is concerned.

You know, when Kris opened his mouth wide, threw his head back and sang with Carlos Santana last night, I could feel his heart in my den with the Chows asleep at my feet in The ‘Kan EWA. He won me over.

I’ll watch America’s Got Talent whenever that comes on again. I know someone who auditioned. He can’t tell me how far he got— but he was out of town a long time.
And I ADORE the Amazing Race.
And Lost. Hooked on that and 24. Those shows both count as reality TV in my world.

  • BlueinIdaho on May 21 at 2:24 p.m.

Not totally surprised, I’ve witnessed more than baffling public elections. It all comes down to “who would you like more as your next door neighbor” than who is the most qualified. Kris can sing, but is completely out of his league compared to Adam. Shed no tears for Adam, he will be a huge star and he doesn’t have to sing that gawd-awful “winner song”! Best ofluck to both of em.

  • mike_s on May 21 at 3:14 p.m.

There were so many freakin’ spoilers on the Internet last night before this aired I already knew the winner. I was really perturbed that this wasn’t embargoed.

  • JamesBond on May 21 at 4:34 p.m.

I understand and respect differing views, but in this case, there is simply no question that Adam is a far, far better vocalist. If America could only hear (not see) them sing, it would have been a landslide for Adam. Alas, Adam’s persona, I must say, frightens many people. The black nails, the metrosexual look, the flamboyance, the possibility that he is homosexual, etc. This frightens many people. I’m not a liberal, pro-gay, or anything. I like speed metal music. I’m not a big Idol fan, but I saw it several times this year, and I heard some debate about the contestants from people I know. Based upon my observations of people’s views, I think it’s pretty clear that Adam turned out an anti-vote against him. The other guy is a decent singer, but bland and forgettable. Adam will be a superstar if he wants to be.

  • spokelooneh on May 21 at 5:24 p.m.

Do they announce the actual results of the vote, i.e. how close was it?

Agree with Bond on the anti-vote against Adam.

  • Me on May 21 at 5:46 p.m.

You do have to take into account personal preference in music styles too. I preferred Kris, Danny and Matt because I liked their types of voices. I don’t particularly like high octive screaming. And I mean men and women. I do NOT like Mariah Carey - I think she screeches. I also always think about how the contestant would work on the radio. I think Adam would be perfect in a band like Queen, or Kiss - that big hair rock but I don’t hear him as a pop singer?? There were a couple of songs that I really liked that Adam sang and I get what people are saying about his vocals - they were always on pitch and perfect - but since every day people vote, some aren’t going to vote for a style that they don’t like.

  • nic on May 21 at 6:09 p.m.

Sorry JB…I don’t mind Adam’s androdynous look. It’s his singing I can’t stand. Everything sounds the same: “WhAAahahAhHahaAHAHAhahaAaAaaAAwAAwaW!”

He ruined. Johnny Cash. He ruined U2. He ruined Aerosmith. he sounds good when he sings, but when he wails (which is almost every song) my skin cralws.

So the black fingernail polish doesn’t bother me. Nor his bad skin. Nor dose the guyliner bother me. Actually, there’s only one thing about his “look” that bothers me and that is how he looks like he’s about to cry at the end of every song. But his screeching singing is atrocious. If AI was a radio show instead of a TV show, I still would have been rooting for the other guy.

  • JamesBond on May 21 at 6:23 p.m.

Adam’s version of Yvonne Elliman’s 1978 disco song If I Can’t Have You was simply stunning. Shakespearean. I’ll be really interested to see what kind of album he puts out.

  • JamesBond on May 21 at 6:24 p.m.

I do agree that Adam’s voice is higher-pitched. He is probably the only singer I think I’ve heard that is capable of hitting the notes that Sebastian Bach would hit in Skid Row classics like I Remember You.

  • Stickman on May 21 at 9:43 p.m.

I have to admit, I have never seen even a single episode. A waste of time. We all dance to a different drummer of course, hence our appreciation of the one known as Kage. Sorry Kage, I just had to throw that in there.
