Vacation Wild Card No. 8 — 5.28.09

Work, of sorts, beckons this morning as I will be part of a discussion panel with Councilman Mike K for Leadership Coeur d’Alene re: the electronic media. I signed up before I decided to take a week and a half off. I had to cancel an online discussion with U.S. Sen. Jim Risch on Wednesday. But I didn’t want to leave the Leadership Coeur d’Alene organizers in a lurch. I was part of the first Leadership Coeur d’Alene class, in 1985. Jim Coleman/JUB, banker Allen Baldridge, insurance broker Bob McNabb & Marilyn Deutsch/Jacklin Seed were part of my class. The goal of Leadership Coeur d’Alene is to introduce future community leaders to movers and shakers involved in a variety of important tasks, from education and transportation to local government and media. Some of my class went on to bigger and better things. Others moved from the area. I’m still trying to make something of myself. Now, for your 8th of 11 vacation wild cards …

    Spring has sprung! What a glorious walk to work this morning. Hope everyone has a great day!

    I’ve been slow on the uptake these days - due to this annoying anemia… But I just need to say - this is a very funny group. I just finished reading the pet peeve link from yesterday. I laughed out loud. Several times. So even though I’m not participating so much right now (having no oxygen in my blood really slows me down!), I am just grateful for the community. Keep on making me laugh!

    Oh, and I’m talking to the president today. Really, I am. No, not president of my soccer league. The actual president. Well, he’s talking to me. But still. Will keep you posted…

    DFO - glad you are doing Leadership - it wouldn’t be the same without you! That was my favorite day when I took Leadership and was why I volunteered to help organize it the next year!

    Loved your post, Marmie. I am absolutely the world’s worst cook but if you send me your recipes I’ll give it a shot.

    In an unrelated topic, Fr Alberto Cutie, a Catholic Priest in Miami, has switched to the Episcopal Church. He was the Priest that was caught smooching his girl friend on a Florida beach recently. Citing his love of the woman, he essentially will continue his role, but without the medieval requirement of celibacy.

    Came across this article this morning. And so it begins,,,,,,,,,,Again. Is it any wonder why N. Idaho can’t shake it’s reputation. {{Sigh}}

    @Herb.

    Yeah, I would want to follow the leadership of a man who didn’t take his vow seriously. :eye roll: How is he continuing his role? Finding someone to accept his vice isn’t a roll change. Some men may not be called to the higher service. But at least be honest about it.

  • Cabbage Boy on May 28 at 10:53 a.m.

    @dennis,
    what reputation are you sighing about? Men wanting to be organized to help and protect other families? Or just because they don’t trust their benevolent overlords?

  • Cindy_H on May 28 at 11:15 a.m.

    ((Beth)) Hope you feel better soon.
    Please ask Obama about that stimulus package for freelance writers. Please!

  • Dennis on May 28 at 12:00 p.m.

    @CB,

    Give me a break CB. You know exactly what I was referring to. Had they stuck with the initial rhetoric in the article about helping their fellow man, that would have been fine. When they redirect off in to the conspiracy theory rhetoric, they sound like nothing more than a modern manifestation of Posse Comitatus.

    You can spin it any way you want. As for me, I’ll stand by my analysis.

  • Cabbage Boy on May 28 at 12:07 p.m.

    Dennis, it may be a conspiracy, but I missed the part about the “theory” in that article.

  • BethB on May 28 at 12:37 p.m.

    Cindy - sorry! didn’t see your posting until after the phone call. ;-)

    Yes, in fact he called from Air Force One. Seriously. This is what the operator said: “Pardon the interruption - this is the Air Force One operator - we have the president on the line.”

    Um, and the other reason I couldn’t ask him about stimulus for writers (something I personally support as well!) is that I wasn’t one of the three people (out of the five thousand or so on the call) who got to ask a question! Stiil - coolest phone call ever…

    It was all about health care. Check out this website for a health care meeting near you on June 6…

    Friends of yours Cabbage? Just go to their website for all the insurrection ya wanna find. Mao’s Treatise on Guerrilla Warfare was a hoot. Can’t imagine why Homeland Security would wanna keep an eye on ‘em.

    Thanks Dennis. I wrote it up, posted it and gave you some credit.

    Actually, I don’t know how many thousands were on the conference call just now - I do know it was thousands…

    Check it out. Dick Harwood’s resolution on state sovereignty got served with a side of hypocrisy.

    Thanks Sis. I just think that it’s ironic that this stuff starts popping up now. Where were they when GWB was running amok?

  • Dennis on May 28 at 2:37 p.m.

    Hey Sis,,,,,, Here’s a question for you.

    What do you think would happen if the Hollywood Studios knew that the Militia outfit was using a likeness of Gary Cooper from one of their films to advertise their site????

    Copyright infringement?????

  • toadman on May 28 at 2:54 p.m.

    HA! That’s funny Sis…

    “We are a sovereign state!! The Feds are out to getcha! But.. uh.. we’ll take some of that free cash, thanks….”

  • Nick_Adams on May 28 at 3:15 p.m.

    Rats! Sis beat me on the hypocrisy watch.

    Also, don’t forget the $2 billion in earmarks that Senators Risch and Crapo are asking for Idaho from the federal budget.

    I wish that there was a credible candidate to take on Crapo in 2010. Not that he’s as bad a Senator as others and I don’t think he can be defeated, but someone should be holding him accountable when he starts spouting off about out-of-control spending.

  • Jen on May 28 at 3:41 p.m.

    Stickman, are you out making sticks during the week? I’m teaching Idaho history next week to a class at the school I was at last year and we are going on a field trip downtown and thought we might stop by on Thursday.

    WALKING IN FLIP-FLOPS
    (sung to the tune of “Walking in Memphis”)

    Walking in flip-flops
    Walking with my feet in cheap plastic shoes
    Walking in flip-flops
    But do I really like the wind through my toes

    Shoes and toes don’t rhyme, but if these lyrics were in a Shakespeare play, they would.

    I marked my official start to summer today by hauling the flip-flops out of the closet.

    re - the idaho militia. I loved this quote from their organizer, “With the way things are heading in our world and nation, you get concerned,” the 59-year-old said. “I think the militia is a patriotic thing. If you read your history, the militia is the one that helped General Washington.”

    I believe General Washington did have a couple of other things going for him, but he’s right the militia were essential.

    However, these people are fooling themselves if they think they would be held in esteem by our founders. Here is General Washington opinion of state militias shortly after the retreat from New York, “To place any dependence on militia is, assuredly, resting upon a broken staff. Men just dragged from the tender scenes of domestic life-unaccustomed to the din of arms … makes them timid and ready to fly from their own shadows.” General Washington used state militias because he had to, regulars were in short supply, but in truth he coveted a regular army.

    Which, by the way, we have now, and those fine men and women are more than able to protect us from China and the perils of international terrorists. These gentlemen’s efforts would best be served learning a trade, engaging in public service, or helping out the nation in some domestic fashion rather than traipsing about the woods playing rambo and fearing their new Democratic leaders.

  • Stickman on May 28 at 6:10 p.m.

    Marmite: I am a fossil of sorts, but I still manage to make a few sticks here and there. And Jen: I have been forced to work for the past year, because the sticks surely don’t pay the rent. I am not usually here during the week, but I am always here in the evenings after about 5pm or so till dark. I am always here on the weekends in the afternoons, so let me know your plans and the times you might be around and I will let you know. It would be nice to see you again and the kids of course.

  • Stickman on May 28 at 6:15 p.m.

    Jen: Thursdays sometimes can be slow for me, so if I know an exact time, I would try to make a point of being here. How’s that?

  • JBelle on May 28 at 8:07 p.m.

    Oh fanks Beth, how daft that woman must be with the marmite lid, cos everyone knows when you first open a new jar of marmite the first thing one does is to ‘lick the lid of life’ :) - or is it only me that does that LOL
