I spent a few days in downtown Seattle recently. I love big city life. I enjoy the hustle and the bustle and the anonymity of blending in with the crowds. I love being able to walk everywhere, and the quiet oasises you find in the midst of urban sprawl. Alas, the condos across from my hotel were going for $600,000 to $6 million. A bit steep for my pocketbook. So, instead of downtown Seattle, I’m going to be renting an office in downtown Spokane for the summer. It will have to do.
I have a feeling I’m in the minority among Hucksters. Which lifestyle do you prefer, country life or city life?

30 years in the country on 60 acres was great until the body gives up.
The last 6 years in the city (CDA) is wonderful.

oh, definitely a city mouse. I think it comes from growing up in rural Idaho, we lived on a couple acres overlooking Blue Creek bay. Now, I love living in the city. (to me, even Boise proper seems like a pretty desolate suburb). It is so nice being able to walk to a grocery store or to catch a bus into downtown for a night out (which is what’ll do tonight). We currently have a house about a mile from UW but might someday trade it in for a downtown condo - who needs a yard?

I loved my little corner of downtown (Sanders Beach area) but it’s losing its small town community appeal with all the high rises and the meth heads moving farther west. Just watched a deal go down in the alley behind my apartment the other day. The guys saw me watching them too. One of them stood there and inspected his score right in front of me.

I like suburbs close to big parks. Like Don I had lake property for awhile but it was too much work for me to enjoy. My family enjoyed it though. I would spend my weekends cleaning up the property, and my family would spend their weekends on my boat and in my fridge…
I happier now in Post Falls, but my wife yearns for the country living still.

I love downtown Seattle - I think it is beautiful in its multi-cultural setting. But I’m really a country girl - Spokane is the right size. Coeur d’Alene is even better for its huge offerings packed in a small package. Just wish the tourists would go back home instead of deciding CDA is the perfect place to live.

BTW, Cindy, it’s cool that we are going to be work neighbors! I’ve been stepping out on my balcony periodically throughout the day hoping to catch you touring the new office building. Let me know when you get moved in, and I’ll bring by an office warming present!

Country Boy all the way. I grew up on a 14,000 acre cattle ranch. I left for college, got married and went to work in the big city. When retirement came, I couldn’t get out of there fast enough. Now I’m living the country life again and LOVING IT!!!!!!!!
Even my lovely wife, who was so city girl she didn’t know how people got milk from cows, has adapted to the country way of life. She loves to visit the big city but has made it clear that a week is all she can handle there and she’s ready to go home.

Thanks, Bent! What a great building. I’ll let you know when I’m settled :-)

30 years in NYC was great and I could adapt again, if I needed to, but I love the small town feel of CdA.

Not so much country but definitely the small town. I have been to most of the big cities in this world and lived in a few and enjoyed it, but the small town has so much more to offer in the way of peace and quiet. Never a country boy though, I couldn’t imagine growing up on a farm. A beach maybe, but that’s it.
JeanieSpokane on May 29 at 4:18 p.m.
Well, I must correct myself. I am a country girl on the outside. Inside, I’m a beach girl all the way.
toadman on May 29 at 4:40 p.m.
Me? Both, actually. I like the night life and the arts and music offered by large cities, but like to retreat to the countryside when I’m done. I’m a study in contrasts, actually.
EagleKeeper44 on May 29 at 7:00 p.m.
Me? I’m a Hybrid; half city mouse, half country mouse.
That way I can be the best of both worlds.
Live on God’s half acre in the suburbs. Just
enough room for my toys and not too big
I can’t take care of it in my advancing years as
I approach Senior citizen status… :)

I love cities, Seattle and San Francisco are two of my favorites. I have never lived in a big city, and after about a week or two in a city, I begin to feel the need to get away from all of the asphalt, noise, and not enough clean air. I feel very fortunate to have grown up in Coeur d Alene, and have always lived in either the CdA area, Spokane Valley, or just recently we spent the school year in Moscow. Pretty cool places to call home!

Portland’s downtown area is pretty cool, and very pedestrian-friendly. I used to like Spokane’s downtown as well, but anymore, I’m not comfortable with what the downtowns morph into come nightfall. I imagine a ton of changes are on the way for Coeur d’Alene as it transforms itself into a metropolis. I’ve never been a country or city person…I don’t like camping; for me it has no purpose. I enjoy plenty of nature in the day, but like my creature comforts at night. And I rarely go out at night, and if I do, I’m usually home by 10pm. I used to think I’d like to be a city person, but, naaah…

Pretentiousness?
