CindyH will sub for me next week as I take some R-n-R to catch a breath after the elections and to enjoy Dr. Oliveria & my wonderful daughter-in-law, who will be visiting between interviews for medical residency at University of Washington and OHSU/Portland and sundry other places. I may give CindyH the keys to the cooler. No one else has ever thrown someone into the cooler since I launched Huckleberries Online almost 6 years ago. She had a devilish look in her eyes when she mentioned how cool it would be to throw someone in there. Just because it’s there. Be very careful next Monday through Friday. BTW, I’ve never been in the cooler myself. Can someone describe what it looks like in there? Now, for your Wild Card …

The top business news this morning is, of course, that the unemployment rate hit 10.2% in October. The highest since April of 1983. It seems those 'shovel ready' jobs that Obama was touting when he was promoting his stimulus bill are not happening as anticipated. Could it be the stimulus was not used to its greatest advantage to create jobs?

No, they weren't the only ones that got it wrong. Problem is that they are running the show. Their 'guess' is the only one that counts when they are spending our money to solve the problem. Personally, I like to see decisions made on something other than a 'guess'.

I posted some rules for karaoke on my blog early this morning. It includes the following:
For all intents and purposes, Stairway to Heaven is the song that never ends.
If your voice sounds like a tranquilized Fozzie Bear, you should not be singing karaoke. However, people will still cheer you on.
and…
If your singing voice isn’t that great, it is always better to follow the “holy poo that was atrocious” guy than it is to sing after the “hey she’s kinda good” girl.

Did I leave any good rules off the list?

The problem is, Kage, that Obama's chief economic advisor said last week that the effects of the stimulus have been largely felt already and that 2010 would not show much improvement.

The first thing that hits you when go into the cooler is the smell, which is foul and rancid.
The tile floor is littered with garbage and empty cans. There's a single light blub hanging from a long brown wire attached to the ceiling, which you can't see because it's covered in darkness. The light bulb flickers occassionally, plunging the entire room into darkness for a few moments. When the lights go out, I swear something crawls across your leg and is gone when the lights come back on.
The door to the cooler is weathered wood with an ironwork across the middle. While there is no door handle, there are claw marks on bottom of the door, as if something or someone couldn't get out.
The sounds of dripping water echo through the cooler. I don't know how big the cooler is, but I tried to explore a little after I heard voices coming from the darkness. The further I went, the fainter the light blub got. As I was walking, I tripped on a what appeared to be a human tibia bone, but I am not sure. Then I heard a deep growling sound from the darkness, so I ran back toward the light.
Around midnight, I was staring at the wall when a slider suddenly opened. A stout man with a pair of yellow eyes and bushy gray hair, appeared, and pushed a tray of food through an opening on the bottom of the wall.. I greedily ate the pizza, which must have been at least a day old and drank a can of diet coke.
Then musak started playing, I am not sure of the source, but it went on all night.
Around 8 a.m., the door swung open, and I was free.

Unemployment tops 10% for 1st time since '83 and it's currently, at 10.2%. Our economy has shed jobs for 22 straight months. It hasn't done that since the Great Depression.
I tend to believe we are in a depression, at least our modern version of one.

Joker, again, nice comment on the cooler. It would be great to see Cindy actually send someone there, but cleaning it up and all the rest can't be allowed. It has to be a rancid and a deplorable place, someplace no one would ever want to be sent. It can't have flowers and shower curtains and pretty pictures hanging about, it has to be a sort of hell that builds character and when that person finally gets out, sees the error in his/her ways.

We're now three hours from kick-off for the BSU-LaTech game. It'll be interesting to see how the game goes given that the UofI barely squeaked one out against the Bulldogs last week. LaTech has played much better at home than on the road, but they're pretty beat up (thanks, Vandals).
Boise State is a 20.5 point favorite. The over/under is 51.5. Place your bets.
My prediction: BSU 48 - LaTech 10.
Also, a nice profile on BSU QB (and Heisman Trophy candidate) Kellen Moore in the NY Times today.
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/06/spo…
The Vandals will face their second-toughest opponent to date tomorrow with Fresno State. Idaho is a 7.5 point dog and the over/under is 67.5. Personally, I think the Vandals lose, but given their penchant this year for thrillers, I'd take the points.

Has anyone noticed the dead silence from Paul volcker? Obama's chief financeial advisor has been total shut out of the white houe. I googleed Volcker and came up with some very ijnteresting speaches he has recently made. He is talking much more pessimistically than the administration, and is probably the most intelligent source of ffinancial information and the economy.
