Butterfly: Teacher Insights

While preparing for my conferences I started to think about what I would like parents to know about teachers. Here are a few of them:

  • We love your kids. We want what’s best for them just like you do.
  • We work hard.
  • We have tons of unmatched coffee mugs and Christmas ornaments that say “World’s Best Teacher” and candles. If you’re going to give a teacher a gift, be creative. (And if you can’t be creative, we love gift cards.)
  • We like parent support. If my parents spend time reading to their children or practicing flashcards, it encourages me to do more, too.
  • We love being teachers. It’s a job that you can’t do if you don’t love it. We don’t love every minute of every day, but we love teaching.

Question: Anyone have a good word for one of your kid’s teachers?

I have thousands of good words for all of my children's teachers. I think it would help teachers, and in particular Katrina, if they could see themselves as their parents and their public see them. :)

Question: Anyone have a good word for one of your kid’s teachers?

Not my kids but my own 70 years ago, 1st grade teacher, Mrs. Swan (too many commas, fractured sentence, Florined?).

Stereotypically wearing a buttoned-up-to-the-neck to that white thingy, she was tall and strict while caring for each child. Draw a capital cursive Q incorrectly and you might get a tap of her ever present ruler across the knuckles, a move that now days might create unemployment.

Unexpectedly she got this five year old nasty-little-nose-picker a head start.

But in spite of her ruler weapon, every kid loved her.

Great words. In over 12 years of interacting with the teachers I can only remember two times not being happy with a child's teacher and both times were just a case of my child not “meshing” with the teacher (the child is not the easiest to mesh with;-)

I have had opportunities to 'teach' some classes in the elementary and high school level and it is some of the hardest work I have ever done. My hat is off to everyone who chooses to teach our children!

I love all of my kids' teachers. Conferences were last week and with the advent of online gradebooks, I feel, for the first time that I am a bigger part of my children's education. They are wonderful people who truly care about my sons and their future. Great instructors, and great partners in raising my boys.

That is good to hear Northerner about online gradebooks. We just started them at my school and I will conference with parents this next week. I hope we get good feedback. Great list Butterfly!
