Wild Card/Saturday — 11.7.09

I’m going to take a few days off to clear my head of the campaign and election fog and to enjoy my kids. I’ll officially turn the controls of HBO Central over to CindyH on Monday. I’ve warned her not to check out the cooler by herself (especially after Joker’s detailed description re: what’s in there). However, she has my go-ahead to toss anyone in there that gives her too much guff. Or if she simply wants to feel the adrenalin rush that comes with doing so. So be careful. I don’t think Cindy will go power mad. But you never know. Now, I’ll play the Wild Card and prepare to go into vacation mode …

The good news is that I am nearly half through radiation therapy. Yay! The bad news is that I will have to go 2 days (at least) longer than I first thought. Once last week and once this week the radiation machine broke down and the cancer center had to cancel all appointments for the day. So, originally, I was told I would be finished the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Now, I will have my last treatment on Monday, November 30 (barring anymore breakdowns).

I have also been going to physical therapy 4 times a week to reduce the swelling in my left arm. The therapist massages the arm (ahh!! feels great) then wraps it so tightly so as to force the edema back into the lymph nodes. I’ve been measured for a compression sleeve that I hope will not be a bulky as the wraps. And more comfortable, too. (again I hope)

I’ve been working throughout radiation. It keeps me sane. Altho, those I work with would suggest otherwise!

Chatterbox, You are definitely in my thoughts and prayers as you continue your fight. You and Jeanie are heros to me because you are both so brave.

Saw Spencer at Costco last night…the mullet is definitely back and he still has the superman bangs up front… You have to give Spencer credit. Not many people can pull that look off, but Larry make its look easy!

(chatterbox, hang in there… our family sends prayers)

Wow, Chatterbox - that had to be so disappointing to have the machines break down. My center has 20 dialysis machines but never more than 16 patients.

They did, though, go through fire alarm safety - that kind of spooked me, thinking of being all tied to machines, holding our blood — and everyone jumping at us, unhooking us in mid-stream, and racing out of the building.

The alarm went off (false) Wednesday and I just about freaked.

I’ll celebrate your last day by sending you happy thoughts! Woo Hoo!!

I saw Spencer there, too! He asked me why I had dropped off the face of the earth, and I mentioned arguing on HBO is pointless. He convinced me to come back! Who’d have thought?

Deena and I said goodbye to an old friend yesterday. She was so lovely, so strong and so powerful, and while she didn’t always work well, when she did she was an amazing work of art.

Yes, we sold the Jaguar yesterday. Our classic ‘65 XKE we called the Silver Bullet is headed back to Europe. A friendly German named Gerhart flew in to buy our beauty, after a test drive I can only describe as ‘exhilerating’. I’m guessing a German’s passion for cars is only matched by their incomparable ability to drive them. As expected Gerhart delighted in the Jag’s remarkable third gear, which as afficionatos can attest, can take her from 20MPH to 100 in mere seconds. While not looking to achieve this (didn’t happen, Rocky) Gerhart found it to be everything he expected. Of course, the record value of the Euro versus our dollar made the trip even more enjoyable for him, I’m sure.

Now, our Jag is headed to join a collection in Hamburg. It strikes me as I write that the Jag is going to be a Hamburg-er. Hmmm.

So, goodbye our beauty. It’s been a pleasure to know you.

Such a classic John. That was the year I graduated and I remember those cars well.

John A, I feel your pain.I sold a ‘59 XK 150 drophead conv years ago and have been kicking myself ever since.Trust that it’s found a good new home.

That’s a nice story JohnA. I don’t think I could have done that. The last time I sold something was around 15 years ago while living in Portland OR. I had a mid-80’s Toyota with about 300,000 miles on it. I put an ad out offering to sell the car for $500 and instantly started getting calls from all sorts of odd balls. The phone was literally ringing off the hook. The guy that ended up buying the car talked me down to $400 and was only actually able to muster up $380 at the time of purchase - the last $20 coming in nickels and dimes. At that point I said – never again – isn’t worth it - I’ll just keep my stuff, trade in on new, take it to the dump, give it to Goodwill or a family friend -no more selling. For me it’s a lot like picking up a hitchhiker - you never know who you’re going to be dealing with.

JohnA. Small world. I was helping the fellow that was assisting you in selling your car. I thought you had a good result. Lots of Europeans are buying cars over here due to the relative value of the Euro and Dollar. Next Spring and Summer, if you feel a void in your life and would like to find another car, let me know. :~)

On this day in 1962, Richard Nixon gave his “last press conference” after losing the California governor’s race.

Said Nixon: “Gentlemen, think of what you’re going to miss. You won’t have Nixon to kick around anymore.”

Just six years later he was elected president.

    A positive, non-political note, :

I’ve been to 3 different local theatres in the last week and have seen 3 excellent productions, 2 of which were easily of Broadway or West End calibre. With all three, I was especially impressed with the cast and the direction. Our area overflows with talent and skill.

Are you saying Gookin can elected to the council, re-elected, engage in rampant corruption, high crimes, and be forced to resign in utter disgrace?

    Man, with friends like that…

House passes health care reform bill.

My advice to you is to buy MORE guns and ammo. Never know when you may have to influence your health care provider at the point of a loaded 30 ought 6 with a banana clip.

C’mon teabagging patriots, gun show tomorrow at the Spokane County Fairgrounds. Little or no questions asked.
