City Mulls Suit Against Reagan R’s

Item: Flier heats up city council race: GOP group says Coeur d’Alene forced Brannon’s firing; city officials may sue/Tom Hasslinger, Coeur d’Alene Press

More Info: A political group is circulating a campaign flier declaring the city of Coeur d’Alene responsible for Jim Brannon’s job loss. The flier’s authors, the Kootenai County Reagan Republicans, say they don’t have any proof on the claim, but they’re entitled to their opinions. The city denied the allegations and said it’s a claim too serious to pass as run-of-the-mill campaign literature. “It’s one thing to discuss differences in government, or politics, and put issues on the table with differences in opinions” said Mayor Sandi Bloem. “It’s a whole other thing to make an accusation of this kind. It’s very serious, very serious.”

Question: Should the city seek legal action against Reagan Republicans for circulating the dubious statement that it is responsible for Jim Brannon’s firing? Or let it go?

Wow, this is getting over the top now the “city” is getting involved…huge mistake for the incumbents to even suggest it.

  • bpoole on October 27 at 8:38 a.m.

It’s a bogus claim. Most that have any intelligence know this claim to be false. Don’t get in the way of the enemy, when the enemy is destroying itself.

    I agree with bpoole…

I read the article to state that the Mayor and Wendy Gabriel wouldn’t state either way about a decision on a lawsuit. Good legal counsel would suggest not making definitive statements like this. I think Mr. Hasslinger is jumping to conclusions with his “city may sue” tagline. It read more like, “City didn’t say it would sue.”

We shouldn’t be surprised by the CDA Mess.

Actually, it’s more likely the night editors that are jumping to conclusions. They typically write the headlines and subheds on articles. Hasslinger states the city’s position (or lack thereof) in the article. The “city may sue” header does not appear to be derived from the article itself. Interesting story, through. You’ve got to love a good pre-election shakeup.

mjd, must mean a ‘mouth piece’. Guess I would like to know what legal pedigree this person has before I attach any substance to what is and what is not wjat a “good legal counsel” would suggest.

“Jim Brannon is such a threat to the tax-and-spend liberals at city hall that, in a shocking act of dirty politics”

Who would a plaintiff be? Does anybody claim to be the “tax and spend liberal at city hall?”

A person would have to have standing, and from what I have seen, nobody has any. Mikey doesn’t like it, and he wants to call a wambulance! I just love it when things done by his friends to help him comes home and roosts in the tree limb above his head and poops on him.

    :-)

    Larry, you are utterly clueless.

  • OrangeTV on October 27 at 9:23 a.m.

I don’t even know where to begin.

  • Sisyphus on October 27 at 9:26 a.m.

The city would be the plaintiff. I remember a similar public action suit here in Boise where one of the parties was a loose affiliation of individuals. When the judge came into the courtroom and had the individuals put their names and contact information on a sheet. Then he explained without prejudging the case that he wanted this information just in case an award of attorney fees and costs becomes warranted in the case. You pay to play.

  • OrangeTV on October 27 at 9:28 a.m.

Okay, when I said “Larry, you are utterly clueless” it was my opinion. It may have seemed like I tried to put that out there as a fact, however I suppose it is not. Hm, where have I heard that before lately?

“Actually, it’s more likely the night editors that are jumping to conclusions. They typically write the headlines and subheds on articles.”

@Keith, thanks for explaining what many readers don’t know. Reporters/columnists do NOT write the headlines, tags, nor in most cases do they write the cutline information on photos.

In another case involving the brother of a current ‘Republican’ candidate for the council in Boise involved a last minute smear campaign in which his activity in the center of the conspiracy was not discovered for a couple years. The man was an attorney who advertises heavily and they took years peeling the onion to find him involving tons of court time. He has since lost his license on other grounds. But his brother/candidate who does not have a legal license continues to manage the legal office with other attorneys while running for this seat.

The moral? The passion on the heat of a campaign can make people do really stupid things that can have long term consequences.

  • LarrySpencer on October 27 at 9:39 a.m.

Wow, Sis, I thought they were talking about Thom George! “the liberals at city hall” is not clear enough to identify “the city” sufficiant to claim standing, and I think you know it. It did not say “the city of CdA got Jim fired”

  • nic on October 27 at 9:52 a.m.

It could be the City, et al. implying multiple plaintifs.

  • Sisyphus on October 27 at 10:39 a.m.

Oh now Larry, the city wouldn’t be mulling over a slander claim silly. There are election laws as the sleaze merchants know all too well since they seem to be aware they are straddling them.

    Well said Sis

  • Fishwife on October 27 at 11:26 a.m.

Actually, my attorney “friend” tells me that you are entitled to your “opinion.” However, when the opinion is passed around as a “fact” which is knowingly false, it is slander. Kind of like passing around a salacious false rumor as fact.

“Where there’s smoke there is fire,” said Jeff Ward, KCRR
     president

Can somebody tell Mr. Ward the smoke is coming from his pants? (in my opinion, of course :).

Thanks, Mr. Brannon and your helpers you won’t reign in, for reaffirming why I’m voting for MikeK.

Yeah I saw that mama. This thing is way overblown and the vitriol over there is concerning especially from xmedia. He sure looks familiar.

    Your lips were moving.
