KeithinCDA: Hey you HBo’ers that have Kindles, give me the low down would you please? Mrs keithincda’s BDay is on Valentines Day and we’ll be in Mexico so I am thinking of getting one for her and presenting it while there. She loves to read in the warm sun by the pool. Do those of you who have it like it? How about reading in sunlight, can you see the screen ok?
Question: Are their happy Kindle owners out there?

I got Mavis a Kindle for Christmas, and she loves it. She actually had a book that a friend got her, but she ended up getting it on the Kindle cause she liked reading it on there better. The screen reminds me of an Etch-A-Sketch, and she reads it outside, at the gym, even in dim light. It’s also very cool how the screen works, it only uses power to turn the page… so the battery lasts a long time. She liked the Kindle over the Sony version, because it has a keyboard so she can enter notes as she’s reading. I know that she would highly recommend it.
I’m kind of the opposite. We get books from the Easton Press book-of-the-month club, and they’re amazing. They’re leather bound, have quilted inlay pages, and just have that “old-school” book feel to them. I’m not much of a reader, but they’re just so cool I can’t NOT read them. I just finished “A Farewell to Arms” (which I definitely would NOT recommend, especially if you like happy endings! :)

For the price of a Kindle, you could get her a bunch of REAL books. Books that are ok if dropped on the cement, ok if left behind in the hotel, ok if you drip sunscreen on them or they get splashed on by hunks frolicking in the pool.
Forget the Kindle. BUY REAL BOOKS! Don’t drink the gadget kool-aid!

Bought one for my wife for anniversary last August. She loves it and particularly loves the ability to download a “sample” of any book she might be interested to read.
Reading in the sun or bright light is not a problem. But need some light. Not for reading in bed without light.
She is disgusted with Amazon, which controls the books available, because they are bowing to some publishers about an increase in price. Most books now are 9.99. Who knows what prices the future will bring.
But competition for electronic readers is increasing, so who knows what the future might be.
Font sizes can be adjusted from quite small to large. But consider that the download of books to her Kindle in Mexico might not work, unless you subscribe to the “international” program. check this out before you buy.

Moscow,
As much as I would like to get a bunch of real books, with my eyesight I need the larger print that the Kindle (or in my case B&N’s nook) provides. There is still not a great selection of large print books in the marketplace, and they are ridiculously expenisve, and using a magnifier is a good portion of the time not a good option. So for me its not the “gadget” factor its that I can actually easily read more books with one.

I have one of the original version Kindles - bought it when I started traveling on a regular basis and wanted to utilitize my baggage space more effectively.
I do love it - as other comments have said, easy to read in bright daylight, not so much in dim; if I don’t have my reading glasses with me, I can up the font size easily; battery really does last weeks (unless you run the wireless mode frequently - that eats it up.)
Although I do purchase books thru Amazon, there are many free books available for download, both on Amazon and other sites. If you love the classics, as I do, you’re in luck.
Best part for me - being able to download a book in seconds when I want something new to read. Worst part - looks like some publishers make Amazon wait a few weeks after the dead tree version is released to make the Kindle version of a potential blockbuster (e.g.: new Stephen King) available. Poopheads.

The Kindle is the coolest thing I’ve bought since my very first laptop. The best thing is that I thought I would think of it as a device or gadget - but I just call it my “book” (although the book changes every few weeks). I’ve got the Kindle DX. No problems reading in sunlight. Its just like a book - but you can sample chapters easier and wirelessly download books in seconds. Is it cheaper - like Moscow noted - heck no. But if it was all about cost, go to a secondhand book seller.
If its a gift - preload a few books before hand so she can use it immediately. Or buy the international version (not sure about the coverage of downloads in Mexico.)
