Wild Card/Tuesday — 2.23.10

Blogfest is now officially behind us. The Olympics are still with us. And the sun is shining on this Mother of All Nice Inland Northwest winters. I forgot to mention here that I encountered some of the area’s best and brightest walking along the waterfront Sunday, including Jon Mueller, and David Rawls and his wife, Hazel Bauman. Also, a group of kids were playing the board game war at City Beach. And the waterfront was busy with people biking, jogging, playing outdoor basketball, sightseeing, and just enjoying the sun. Have you been down to the waterfront yet this year? You can answer that question. Or use this Wild Card to start your own threads …

I love the City Beach in the winter. A few weekends ago, I took my 5 year old son to play in Fort Sherman Park. After we finished playing on the structure, we went down to the beach. It was sunny, about 45 degrees, and it felt warm.

I looked around, and my son and I were the only ones on the beach, save for a family walking their dog along the shore. I smiled, realizing that in that moment, I was experiencing something special. The entire CDA waterfront, all to myself, on a sunny, pleasant Sunday afternoon. It was glorious. I love downtown CDA, it is really a treasure.

Chuckles. Even in the middle of summer, even on a warm and beautiful day, I often head down the lake in a boat and will be the only boat in view. Very, very unique to our area having the generally low population area surrounding us. It is the one thing that makes our area so fantastic. I can appreciate how you felt the other day. Its not often one has their own private lake.

When I moved to Moscow to go to school I missed the waters of Lake Coeur D’ Alene dreadfully. And I still miss them. When I have to be in CdA I go early with a pair of good shoes and walk the lake from the river to Sherman and back again. It’s the best. Today I’ll walk along the Pacific on the look out for turtles. Yesterday I went parasailing and while soaring 500 feet over the harbor at Kona watched the whales frolicing and playing on a morning when it was just them and me in the entire of the Pacific Ocean. Being from CdA makes me different somehow and I am deeply grateful, everyday, for the waters of Lake Coeur d’Alene that washed me early and deeply.

The view along the lakeshore is never the same. I like to walk the approximate 2 miles from the library, around the boardwalk, along City Beach and then to the end of Rosenberry Drive (dike road) around the college — and back again. The view is never the same, depending on the time of year, time of day, activities on the water, and along the shore. Generally, people are out exercising or enjoying themselves. Changes in the weather, time of year, time of day change the view — even in the winter when few others are out. It’s exhilarating. I rarely end my walks without marveling at the wonderful place in which I live.

BTW, JBelle; you were missed again at Blogfest ‘10. Are we going to coax you to one of these before I retire?

  • Stickman on February 23 at 11:31 a.m.

I never quite make it over to the city park, but mostly just on Tubbs Hill. Lately it’s been fantastic, and though a bit cold, the sun really feels good when shining on you. I am a little jealous of JBelle in Kona, one of the places I used to roam. I hope you are having a great time there.

A good news day. I got an email a bit ago that our son is coming home a month or two earlier than he thought from his current tour in Iraq. He said it sounds like he’ll be home in time celebrate St. Patricks day on U.S. soil.

I’ll drink a Guiness to that!

  • DFO on February 23 at 12:24 p.m.

@ DanoftheCounty re: “I’ll drink a Guiness to that!”

First, congratulations on the good news. You must be a proud & relieved father. Secondly, I don’t think Guinness beer is available since Chicago Mike won re-election and got the KVNI guys fired for offering him a bootlegged 6-pack of the elixir. I tried to get one at Fort Ground Grill. But the Guinness was sold out. Of course, Chicago Mike was nearby. Mebbe the barkeep was afraid to provide me with one. Anyone know where you can get a Guinness in this town?

  • Me on February 23 at 12:32 p.m.

You’re in my wheelhouse now….. I did comment after the blogfest that I only had 2 Guinness and then they ran out - and the possible tie to Chicago Mike.

    O’Shays
    Both Capones
    Bardenay

There may be others and many now have the cans with the zapper thingy like Fort Ground had. Those are fine in a pinch. And even a bottle is OK.

Mia mentioned to me O’Doherty’s in Spokane that does the proper pour of a Guinness and that isn’t the first time I’ve heard that - so I need to check it out.

  • Me on February 23 at 12:33 p.m.

    Oh - forgot the Porch.

  • Fork on February 23 at 12:58 p.m.

    And Moontime.

    Is it too early….

  • Stickman on February 23 at 2:11 p.m.

I have found a renewed vigor in a sense to comment more, mostly because I like the new way the blog is going and also because just recently, I have had a couple of blurkers approach me and mention that they missed my posts. It was purely because I didn’t care for where the political conversations usually ended up and I stomped away for awhile. I liked the respite, and now I feel I have many good stories to tell and lots of experience, so I am going to continue as I have for many years now. The blogfest also made me realize that we are such a diverse group and we all have something to say. Sometimes we don’t like what we see, so it bothers us and we leave. I like this family a lot and will always drop by each and every day. If something sparks my interest, then you will hear more than you might want from me. It is also good to see Toad commenting again, that really makes me smile. Some of us throw comments out there like there is only a few reading and maybe a few might comment. I know that there are many people that just read each day and never want to enter the fray. Thousands in fact. So let’s keep it a nice place to visit and always think maybe twice about what you write. I never did, but I sure do now. Even then, I screwed up at times. Thanks for listening and hopefully, some of you blurkers decide to say how you feel. I would love to read your comments.

Guinness for the win! I will tell you this though….you have not really tasted a Guinness unless you have had one in Ireland. In the late 90’s I went to Ireland and we stopped at Smyths pub in Dublin. The owner of the B and B we were staying at recommended it saying, “They are one of the first pubs to get fresh Guinness.” I will never forget how CREAMY and robust the flavor of the Guinness was. Never has even come close here in the States.

Enjoy your quite time around the lake while it lasts….before the Cigarette Boats come out to play.

Hey Me, let me know when you are going to hit O’Doherty’s and we’ll pull the spokane HBOers together for a mini-after-work beerfest…

  • moscow_minidoka on February 23 at 3:24 p.m.

My wife and I had our rehearsal dinner at O’Doherty’s. I wasn’t terribly impressed by the food, but my nerves may have been a big factor… and I passed on the beer, ‘cause I knew that if I started drinking that night, my nerves would keep on asking for more beer until I ended up with a wedding day hangover.

Maybe we should give the place another try… a Guinness sounds pretty good right now.

  • Me on February 23 at 3:31 p.m.

Bent - I will let you know for sure!

Shan - even better - have one at the Storehouse where it is made. I did that a couple of years ago and its actually when I fell in love with it. None since have compared, but I keep trying anyway….. There are many little side stories from that night in Dublin, for another time…..

  • Cindy_H on February 23 at 3:48 p.m.

@Bent and Me: Can I stick with Blue Moon or Corona Light?
I don’t like beer you have to chew.
I’m about ready for another Spokane Huckster gathering :-)
(PS: If you want the Guinness to last the night, don’t tell MikeK when we’re going)

  • shanusmaximus on February 23 at 4:03 p.m.

    @Cindys

Did you know that Guinness only has 43 calories? Try the Guinness diet today!!

Just saw that Costco has Guiness…but you’ve gotta want a lot of it…$27 a case!!

  • Cindy_H on February 23 at 5:37 p.m.

@shanus: But does it taste great and is it less filling? Will I get the dreaded bitter beer face?
Actually, that’s a handy reference. Thanks!

“Idaho’s immunization rates are so low that its rate for measles is lower than that of Indonesia, Pakistan or Croatia, and its rate for polio is below that of Botswana, Latvia and Sri Lanka, according to the Idaho Division of Health.”

Gawd, we live in a third world state!

  • geoffocache on February 23 at 7:02 p.m.

Ok, now I am craving a Guiness but I guess I have to settle for the Newacstle I already have in the fridge. Thanks!

“I passed on the beer, ‘cause I knew that if I started drinking that night, my nerves would keep on asking for more beer until I ended up with a wedding day hangover.” —MM

Ha! I was still a little drunk at my wedding I think… I had the bachelor’s party the night before… don’t ever do that, BTW…

I am all for a Huckster’s night out as well… And we’ll hook you up with the right brew Cindy… a Black-n-Tan (with Harp being the Tan) may be the solution…

  • Me on February 23 at 8:13 p.m.

Cindy - I laughed when I read about “chewing my beer”. I used to say that all the time - and I know this is totally strange, but I like either Micholob Ultra OR Guinness. To me Guinness isn’t heavy. It reminds me of a coffee flavor and I think it doesn’t seem as heavy to me because it doesn’t have so much fizz. In fact many complain that it’s flat.

Anyway I did learn to love Guinness. And of course Cindy you can have ANY beverage you want! It’s the company that counts, not the liquid.

  • Stickman on February 24 at 3:18 p.m.

Bent: I may even come for one of those events. As long as you bring some of your world famous brew. On second thought, maybe I will stay here and hope you and I get together for another bent beer fest this coming spring or summer. I always enjoy those and the company is fantastic.
