JBelle: Palin Gets ‘D’ In Opener

JBelle: Saw a clip of Ms. Palin’s debut last evening—on MSNBC. She’s got a long way to go. She speaks solely in her nose, which makes her highly irritating to listen to and for someone who has been a fitness and yoga practitioner for many years, she has absolutely no command of her breathing which makes her voice both nasal and pinched. Not being articulate in the slightest doesn’t add value to her package and in the final analysis, one is left to ponder her hair and makeup, which on Fox is not even close to what you see when Palin appears on Oprah. Grade for Opening Night: D.

Question: Anyone else care to comment on Palin’s opening night as a Fox commenter?

I watched her appearance and wouldn’t be nearly as critical as JBelle, of course. However, and not to be defending her necessarily, I think she was quite nervous in her first appearance. O’Reilly is the king of news broadcasts. He is a big deal, especially at Fox. Just look at his ratings. Being in his presence, I think there was undue pressure on Palin to perform. O’Reilly did NOT throw her softballs. He asked tough questions. I trust her future appearances will be improved as she becomes comfortable with that format.

    You’re missing the point, JBelle.

Fox didn’t hire her to appeal to intellectuals with her impressive articulation and insight into complex issues.

She was hired to appeal to her fan base of proles, and her nasal accent acts as a cultural emblem that only increases that appeal.

Not knowing things like the reason for the North/South Korea split only adds to her appeal, because who needs to know stuff? That’s for elite snobs. Everyone knows all you need is a good “gut” and the Holy Spirit.

  • Sisyphus on January 13 at 11:04 a.m.

Not softballs, they were soccer balls. It was difficult to tell who was telling her story, Bill or her. But then nothing goes on his show he doesn’t control. Fair and balanced. LOL

Out of curiosity, Sis or Phaedrus or Spoke, who do you think provides the better balance of the political news? What do you guys prefer to watch?

  • Sisyphus on January 13 at 11:17 a.m.

I don’t watch any network or cable news. Its a sifting process.

And here’s a well written criticism of your comment that Palin gets hard hitting questions.

I get my news from NPR’s Morning Edition and the Daily Show, which between the two keep me pretty well informed. I can’t stomach Fox “News”, but if I want to know what they think I’ll watch Ketih Olbermann and simply infer they believe the opposite.

  • hmoffsuite on January 13 at 11:28 a.m.

Sis >> “And here’s a well written criticism of your comment that Palin gets hard hitting questions.”

Consider your source here. His opinion means very little to me. But, I can see where you prolly rest on his every spoken word. O’Reilly told Palin that she is not perceived as being very bright and “are you smart enough to be President” You think that is a soccer ball? Several other questions we rather difficult as well.

  • Sisyphus on January 13 at 11:35 a.m.

(sigh) Its not opinion, its reasoned analysis supported by facts. (Bangs head on keyboard) Try working on those distinctions for a while.

Referring to her critics as pinheads is not what I’d say is a hard hitting interview worth anybody’s time.

  • hmoffsuite on January 13 at 11:41 a.m.

Sis. You have got to be kidding. Reasoned analysis supported by facts?? Whose reasoning? My distinctions are quite intact, thank you.

  • spokelooneh on January 13 at 11:51 a.m.

I regard this as a bad step for her presidential aspirations as I would dearly love to see her as the GOP standard bearer in 2012.

The Neocon teabagger wing of the Elephants love her and always will. The thinking conservatives see her for what she actually is politically: Proudly Ignorant, incompetent, unelectable, and a money grubbing quitter.

    From the conservative National Journal:

“A poll of GOP insiders suggests that ex-AK Gov. Sarah Palin (R) has little support among the party’s professional class — and maybe that’s just how she wants it.

In a survey of 109 party leaders, political professionals and pundits, Palin finished 5th on the list of candidates most likely to win the party’s ‘12 WH nomination. Ex-MA Gov. Mitt Romney (R) was the overwhelming choice of the

Voters were asked to rank 5 candidates in the order of likeliness to capture the GOP nod.”

The best analysis I’ve seen of how one can be fairly certain Palin has an average IQ was at http://www.halfsigma.com/2008/11/palins-estimated-iq-is-100.html

  • HonestGeorge on January 13 at 12:26 p.m.

Painful. O’Reilly gave Palin numerous opportunities to show familiarity with subjects that tripped her up in the past - but she didn’t take nary a one.

  • Sisyphus on January 13 at 12:52 p.m.

That was excellent Lizard, except the swipe at Trig, not because he’s off limits, and he is, no matter how much his mother pulls him into it, but because the author is wrong about it.

And let me say that I think that while our politics don’t coincide, you are the deepest thinking conservative I’ve seen in the Idaho blogosphere and who supports his assertions. I especially like your cites to AmCon. I’d feel much more comfortable about the direction of the country if more were like you.

  • Lizard_People on January 13 at 1:17 p.m.

oh, do go on. (scales blushing)

  • spokelooneh on January 13 at 1:37 p.m.

And here is a letter from an obviously intelligent and informed citizen about Palin’s background and record as Mayor and Governor in Alaska:

“It is astonishing and almost scary how well she can keep a secret. She kept her most recent pregnancy a secret from her children and parents for seven months.

She is energetic and hardworking. She regularly worked out at the gym.

She is savvy. She doesn’t take positions; she just “puts things out there” and if they prove to be popular, then she takes credit.”

Sarah campaigned in Wasilla as a “fiscal conservative.” During her six years as mayor, she increased general government expenditures by more than 33 percent. During those same six years, the amount of taxes collected by the city increased by 38 percent. …”

    Pretty interesting, looneh.

  • JIMMYMAC on January 13 at 4:42 p.m.

She’s not my cup of tea. Many like her, that’s their prerogative but I will be very disappointed if she is my party’s nominee in 2012.

  • richard on January 14 at 8:25 a.m.

Yeah, Meida Matters isn’t agenda-ridden, is it sis? You could read 100 commentaries from their writers about anyone on Fox and you could not find one flattering or intellectually honest comment.

They win the prize for partisan hacks.

  • Phaedrus on January 14 at 9:28 a.m.

I think she was quite nervous in her first appearance—hmoffsuitre

LOL! Seriously? She has been living in front of the cameras for most of the past year and a half—”her first appearance”— a pathetic and laughable defense. I saw a clip on her with Beck and she appeared stumped when she was asked to name her favorite founding father, “All of them,” she said. that’s some astute political commentary that Fox paid for. ROTFLMAO!

  • Phaedrus on January 14 at 9:39 a.m.

Everyone knows all you need is a good “gut” and the Holy Spirit.—LP

Liz, smart, concise and spot on. I’ll echo Sisyphus praise, we need more thinking conservatives, like you, and fewer of the Fox following simpletons who are too willing to accept simplicity and too suspicious of intellectual effort.

  • Sisyphus on January 14 at 9:39 a.m.

richard, instead of dissing the source, perhaps you could point out where they are inaccurate. They do have an agenda, pointing out the bias and distortions in the traditional media. Fox makes themselves an easy target. I think if Fox viewers would also look at Media Matters they might get to the point of ‘fair and balanced’.

  • hmoffsuite on January 14 at 9:43 a.m.

Sis >> ” I think if Fox viewers would also look at Media Matters they might get to the point of ‘fair and balanced’.”

From your point of view, of course.
