This is a month of milestones for my family and me. My sister, who runs 5 miles a day, celebrated her 65th birthday on Flag Day. My mother, who takes no prescription medicine, celebrates her 85th birthday tomorrow. My wife and I celebrated out 35th anniversary yesterday. And I reached the end of my 40th year in the news biz mid-month. I began my career in June 1970 with the Chico (Calif.) Enterprise-Record. I made career stops in Red Bluff & Stockton, Calif., before moving to Kalispell, Mont., where I managed Duane Hagadone’s Daily Inter Lake for 5 years. Then, onto the Lewiston Tribune, where I worked as the news editor. In September 1984, I joined the SR (to become a courthouse reporter, then column writer, editorialist, and now blogger). I continue to enjoy my career. Now, I’ll play the Wild Card & quit reminiscing …

Which is prettier to you Dave, Flathead Lake or Lake CdA? Or, no comparison?

@ Brent Andrews re: “Which is prettier to you Dave, Flathead Lake or Lake CdA? Or, no comparison?”
Yeow! How do you compare 2 of God’s masterpieces. Throw in Lake Pend Oreille, and you simply stand back in awe. If push came to shove, I’d pick Lake Coeur d’Alene over Flathead as a result of proximity. I walk along the north shore several times a week, while Flathead Lake is 7 miles south of Kalispell. I consider myself sooooo blessed that I’ve lived in such beautiful country most of my adult life. However, as nice as Best & Canfield mountains are out my front door and back door, I’ll take the breath-taking Rockies, west of Kalispell, any time. Also, Glacier Park over Farragut.

Lake CDA—because of what surrounds it as opposed to what surrounds Flathead Lake.

That view at K-spel is incredible but I think Lake CdA is safer as far as the potential for being eaten by griz, wolves, etc.
I dived the bottom of a muddy Tennessee lake for hours yesterday looking for Dad’s dock poles in the pitch dark and muddy fog down there about 10 feet - we found the ladder and one of the poles and no snakes or snapping turtles, thank goodness, but the whole experience made me long for the clear blue lakes of your part of the world … easier to find your dock parts there, I guess.

“A federal judge struck down the Obama administration’s six-month ban on deepwater oil drilling”
This isn’t just about big oil, this is about the livelihood of the people in that area. It was the “small people” who were asking the judge to strike down that media move by Obama.

I just saw a gal and her young daughter (maybe 5) walk by with a bunny on a harness/leash hopping merrily along with them. I had to go outside and look again to make sure I wasn’t seeing things. LOL

I remember the young reporter coming into my little store and then reading the nice article he wrote about my husband and I moving here. And I also remember the not as young reporter referring to my same husband as a Bozo in a hucks column. That really made my day.

You have a good memory, FHB. One of the first stories I covered upon arriving in fall 1984 involved a story in your ‘hood. It might have had something to do with water quality. I’m not sure. But I do remember meeting you.

I’m so easy to please sometimes. I can’t stop watching, and laughing at, this World Cup video.
