Don't look now, but the neo-Nazis are picketing Chiludo's again. That's the Mexican food stand north of Les Schwab Tires on Government Way (the strip mall behind the tire place that used to house the Long Ear). A Berry Picker saw a handful of pickets near the Mexican stand. Better yet, she said, Chiludo's had a long line of customers waiting for food. And, she added re: the racists: “Why aren't these guys at work?” One of the signs said: “Honk, if you want a white Idaho.” Tony Stewart, a co-founder of the Kootenai County Task Force on Human Relations, would tell you to make sure you purchase lunch from one of the stands picketed by the neo-Nazis — the other is Taco Works @ 5th & Appleway — to show that you support the business owners. When was the Long Ear located there? I’ve been in Kootenai County for years and the LE has always been on 4th Street. (How old are you?)

I will be eating there for lunch today. You know they have great food there too — yummy
Wes on January 28 at 1:53 p.m.
We will be having Mexican food from one of the stands for lunch Saturday.

The best way to make these kind of haters go away is to frequent these stands, and for the media to not mention the protesters. (Word of mouth through blogs, texting and etc. is OKAY)
I will drive there myself and have a taco.

And, she added re: the racists: “Why aren’t these guys at work?”
They’re collecting their welfare checks and selling their crank.

Hey look! Mouth breathing brain dead ignorant and frightened morons in their natural habitat!
Phaedrus on January 28 at 2:23 p.m.
These people don’t even follow flag etiquette; the American Flag should be held above their racist banner. Morons.
fat_lady_sings on January 28 at 2:27 p.m.
“Honk if you want a white Idaho”…dang it. One of my friends honked as she was driving by…BUT she flipped them the bird simultaneously. I wonder if they were confused?

Ate ate Taco Works yesterday… Chiludo’s, see you again next week! :)
OrangeTV on January 28 at 2:32 p.m.
Phaedrus, the Long Ear opened in approx 1984 in a small space in that strip mall where the hobby shop was that recently burned down. Some time in the early 90s they moved to a bigger space in the same building and were there until about 2002 or so when they moved to their current location. Odd that you mention the Long Ear, I just got home from a visit there.
toadman on January 28 at 2:35 p.m.
I’m just gonna throw this out there..
I wonder why they feel so comfortable coming out of their white’s only closet in North Idaho?

“I wonder why they feel so comfortable coming out of their white’s only closet in North Idaho?”—don’t get comfy. Last time they picketed these places, Spokane got a nasty lethal bomb left in its downtown.
And speaking of which, a couple former Washington wingnut residents are undergoing their murder trial right now.

It was unfortunate that the photographer was unable to include the long lines of people waiting for food, rather than just these jack booted thugs.

@Sys - well said.. bad wording on my part. find/replace North Idaho/Inland Northwest. k?
Like so:
“I wonder why they feel so comfortable coming out of their white’s only closet in the Inland Northwest?”
Better?

Wish I was there to support the taco trucks. I’d be there right now if I was in CDA. Shameful behavior.
OutofStaterTater on January 28 at 3:02 p.m.
Phaed and OTV, I remember buying Dave Matthews Band’s album “Crash” from the Long Ear in the old location, so the move had to come more toward the mid to late ‘90s. For what it’s worth.
Toadman, I appreciate the second take a little better. North Idaho got better at dealing with this thug movement when we moved past denying it was a problem, and I hope that will be the case elsewhere as well.
DFO, I know you can only post things as fast as you get them, but if the word can get out about this kind of stuff before rather than after lunch, I’m sure a lot more people will be willing and able to visit the taco stands. I guess that’s more of a call to Hucks Nation to be speedy passing the word along…

@ Toad Man re: “I wonder why they feel so comfortable coming out of their white’s only closet in North Idaho?”
One of your real blind spots, Toad … is you inability to see that you have every bit the problem with racism in eastern Washington, as we do in North Idaho. Yet, you continue to point fingers. BTW, can you remind me again where that backpack bomb was found that receive nationwide attention. I’ve seen race incidents in Spokane that I thought about bringing up to you. But reconsidered. Mebbe I should begin to do so. The incidents targeting the Mexican food stands are being conducted by Shaun Winkler and the same handful of followers. On the other hand, I must admit that North Idaho will become increasingly attractive to these types of folks if the Far Right politics exhibited by a couple of our legislators sweeps Kootenai County — as it’s threatening to do.

I wonder how many diets these guys are ruining. I *was* going to stop eating meat, but then I had to buy a taco, and was I just going to throw it away?
OutofStaterTater on January 28 at 3:08 p.m.
Can we organize a campaign that will buy one taco for every minute the thugs picket a taco stand? I think the Human Rights Education Institute did something like this years back when Butler & Co. had a parade down Sherman. Donors lined up to donate a dollar or more for every minute the parade lasted. So if the parade lasted 30 minutes and 30 people pledged $1 a minute toward HREI, the result was $900 in donations to a great cause - an outcome exactly the opposite of what the Aryans wanted. I’ve always thought this was a great idea. The longer the thugs picket, the more they do to line the pockets of the very people they’re picketing.

@ OOST re: “I know you can only post things as fast as you get them, but if the word can get out about this kind of stuff before rather than after lunch, I’m sure a lot more people will be willing and able to visit the taco stands.”
Indeed, you received the news about the picket within 5 minutes after I did. A few minutes after that, I received 2 photos of the incident — one from Idaho Dad and the other from Stebbijo of Stebbijo’s Place (a former regular on Huckleberries Online). Stebbijo has a very good photo of the neo-Nazis pulling their dastardly intimidation feature. You can see it here:
http://stebbijo.com/2011/01/thugs-picket-taco-stand-in-coeur-dalene-idaho/
I appreciate the tip-offs re: these incidents. I’d suggest that you regularly frequent these stands and let the business owners know that you appreciate them. It must be pretty intimidating and frustrating to try to sell your food with these hotheaded jerks holding their signs and despicable flags.

In answer to your question Toad. I have no doubt that images circulating from tea bagger rallies, the advancement of Arizona’s controversial immigration law, and certain anti Hispanic comments made by the Bonner County Republican Party contributed to these people’s notions to 1) target Hispanics for their vitriol and 2) giving hope for recruitment to their cause.

These guys need to get a life. If I could I would by everyone I know dinner there this evening!!
To address another issue brought up here. Being for small government, pro constitution, and against ILLEGAL immigration does not make make one a racist. I have hispanic friends that are against ILLEGAL immigration.
hmoffsuite on January 28 at 3:46 p.m.
OST >>> ” I’ve always thought this was a great idea”
I don’t think it is a good idea, actually. It is not wise to create any form of a physical confrontation with these guys. That happened when Butler had his parade one time. The protesters drew more attention than the marchers did. Made the national TV and was a terrible reflection on the City of CDA. Remember Irv Rubin of the JDL. Any physical contact between the whackos and any other (semi) organized group will just inflame things, imo.
Sisyphus on January 28 at 3:52 p.m.
So you’d be an appeaser then.
“Being for small government, pro constitution, and against ILLEGAL immigration does not make make one a racist.”—I don’t think anyone called you one. I’m sure some of your best friends are Hispanic.
