Adam Boos Me For Blasting 7 Solons

Boos to DFO and Cheers to the Fiscal Rehab 7: I don't usually pick on DF Olivera at Huckleberries Online. He's been pretty decent to me over the years. However, I got to give him a boo for his attack on 7 Conservative State Senators as being “clueless” for voting against making a change that would allow Idaho unemployed workers to claim additional benefits against a bill “when. It.(sic) Doesn't. (sic) Cost. (sic) Idaho. (sic) A dime?!” Where exactly does Mr. Olivera think this money is coming from? His question seems to be how could Idaho refuse FREE FEDERAL MONEY! Because it isn't free. The money that Conservative Senators like Russ Fulcher and Steve Vick said no to is coming from our great grandkids/Adam Graham, Adam's Blog. More here.

DFO: I wished Adam would spell my surname right, if he's going to boo me. BTW, the supermajority of you readers who agreed in an HBO poll that our 7 (Vick plus all Kootenai County's House reps were “clueless” also deserve the boo. I suppose.

I guess that Adam Graham must really be set up for life, that he doesn’t have to worry about where his next paycheck is coming from, whether he loses his job, or becomes so severely unemployed that he doesn’t even make a hundred dollars every two weeks.

So, since he doesn’t want his grandkids paying for the unemployment insurance of his fellow Idahoans, then here is a suggestion: That he immediately mail out job offers to all 17,000 unemployed Idahoans and put as many back to work at decent hours and decent wages as possible. The more people employed after all, the less likely his grand kids will have to pay for unemployment. Otherwise, Graham, do us a favor and just shut up!

Sis: Careful with that ‘sic him’ talk.

I accept his Boo, no problem. But still agree with extending the benefits.

  • Don_Sausser on March 15 at 1:28 p.m.

IMO, Adam expresses a point that I noted in DFO’s first post. It feels good to be compassionate but there are always consequences to good or bad actions.

How many times should a program be extended?
Should there be any limits to unemployment benefits?
Should, after a period of effort, an unemployed be required to consider any employment, even if not in his/her preferred occupation?
Should enforcement be increased to decrease the recently reported 24% who abuse the system?

Many questions, few answers when folks polarize over feel good action.

I’d send a boo back at Adam … I don’t need a whippersnapper to tell me that the money has to come from somewhere. Our money. Our grandkids’ money. But I, as someone who sits in leadership at my church and deals with benevolent requests regularly, knows that many people can’t find work in this climate. In Idaho, that number adds up to 17,000 who need extended benefits. Adam & our 7 Kootenai County legislators are going to make a stand on principle re: extending benefits because their bellies are full and they know where the next meal is coming from. In fact, our legislators have some great health insurance benefits, should they happen to get sniffles during the winter. The people I deal with don’t have any health insurance. Some are lucky to have rent. Our food pantry is in heavy use. I doubt that many Idahoans can survive on the lousy $350 that they might receive, if they had a decent job before getting laid off. To deny them that piddly amount for extra weeks to me is the height of hard-heartedness & cruel ideology.

  • Joker on March 15 at 1:41 p.m.

Most people want to work. They don’t feel good collecting an unemployment check. The entire process of collecting unemployment is a downer. Unemployment checks can make the difference in staying in your home or losing your car or eating.

All these so called Christians should have no problem helping out people in dire situations. I don’t mind paying taxes if it keeps families from being homeless. Are there abuses of the system, yes. Does that mean we should punish everyone. No.

I say keep unemployment benefits going as long as needed. If we ended the wars in the middle east, there would be plenty of money to pay for these type of programs.

Wow, you even got the old codger lingo down. A little hard-hearted and cruel for such a warm fuzzy post.

Keep on spending money that isn’t there. I am sure that will come to a good end. Somehow, some fairy will make everything right. Or maybe that is where the joblessness and recession came from. So sit in your ivory tower and mock those that are making decisions that needed to be made, should have been made years ago.

  • DFO on March 15 at 2:24 p.m.

@ Cabbage Boy re: “So sit in your ivory tower and mock those that are making decisions that needed to be made, should have been made years ago.”

One of us is isolated. But I don’t think it’s me. Mebbe years of being in councils trying to figure out how we’re going to help people keep roofs over their families heads and keep their families fed has moved me away from your ideologically hard-hearted position. Yes, I understand that Congress has followed the past 2 presidents down the rabbit hole in terms of wasteful spending and ever-expanding government. But to turn the guns on those who are struggling simply to meet a minimum standard of existence or get a semblance of an education is something I can’t stomach. Fortunately, the Idaho Legislature isn’t so far gone that it embraced the ideology of those with hearts two sizes too small during the vote on benefit extension.

  • scootermom on March 15 at 2:26 p.m.

    Whippersnapper?

My dad just refered to the young and clueless as punks. Dad has more in common wiith Dirty Harry than he does with Howard Cunningham.

  • Phaedrus on March 15 at 2:28 p.m.

Keep on spending money that isn’t there— CB

    1- End two wars.
2- Stop the taxpayer give-away to corporations (like oil)

They money is there, it’s just being allocated improperly.

  • Cabbage Boy on March 15 at 2:31 p.m.

Phaed, I support both items in your list. But the money is still not there. Not 1.3 trillion worth.

  • Cabbage Boy on March 15 at 2:35 p.m.

Sit on all the councils you want, seems to be the liberal solution. I have tried that, but prefer actually helping people rather than talking about it.

  • Sisyphus on March 15 at 2:37 p.m.

LOL CB. Then you agree that all this DC squabbling over $60 billion is pointless.

  • Cabbage Boy on March 15 at 2:44 p.m.

    pointless? 60 Billion? how?

Cutting 60 billion out of a 1.3 trillion deficit is sure better than spending it. How is that for an answer?

  • DFO on March 15 at 2:56 p.m.

@ Cabbage Boy re: “Sit on all the councils you want, seems to be the liberal solution …”

When you start questioning my involvement in people’s lives, it’s time for me to step away. Or toss you in the cooler. I’ll step away for now. But I’d advise you to rein in your snarky comments …

  • Sisyphus on March 15 at 3:12 p.m.

Spin spin spin CB. I’d wager if you put all the items to cut in a poll, our two Middle East wars would be on.top of that polling list And that’s a whole lot more than your $60 billion. What’s really sad about the proposed cuts, is that they have nothing to do with fiscal conservatism. Instead its political opportunism. Worse, the proposed cuts won’t save money.

In the grander scheme of things nobody gives a damn about deficits and debt over the economy and jobs. All the squabbling in DC right now over it is ridiculous kabuki. But for the massive deleterious effects on the economy, I really really hope Republicans shut down the government. I’d expect this trend to escalate.

When it comes to dealing with issue No. 1, the economy, Obama has an advantage: 46 percent say they put more faith in the president, 34 percent say so about congressional Republicans. Obama has a similar 12-point lead on the question of who better understands the economic problems people face, and a nine-point edge on dealing with the deficit.

Among those who say a government shutdown would be harmful, about twice as many say they would hold the GOP, rather than the president, responsible. A similar question two weeks ago showed that about as many said they would blame Obama as the congressional Republicans for a such a stoppage.

  • CDA_Mom on March 15 at 3:26 p.m.

CB — your comment to DFO is spineless. I assume your contribution to keeping people from being homeless or hungry, is to advocate for tax breaks to business? What DFO does is much more needed in our society right now. I believe that our state is very pro business — but in this economy, it will be a while before the unemployment problem (and accompanying poverty problem) is solved. Nice that your advocacy can sit in a home with heat, water, electricity, food ect. Many do not have that luxury.

  • Cabbage Boy on March 15 at 3:40 p.m.

Sis, if you follow what I said, I would have cut the funding for the “war” long ago.

And CDA mom, your assumptions are incorrect. But that is what assumptions typically are. All I said was we can’t spend what we don’t have. And for that I am called hard-hearted from the ivory tower.

No my approach is much more humanist than tax breaks. Actually getting out and helping those that need it.

  • Don_Sausser on March 15 at 6:57 p.m.

Out of the above 20 responses no one considered the four important questions I posed. But several, once again, attacked the messenger.

@Joker “say keep unemployment benefits going as long as needed.” And who determines a level of need, the recipients?

The same tired canards continue: sic, “old white comfortable guys got theirs and to hell with the rest”, “Fox news warps one’s mind”, “no more wars would provide more money for entitlements (how about lowering the debt?), “end tax breaks for business (when they are appropriated by both parties to encourage job creation), “spending cuts won’t save money”, etc.

Conservative posters are often hammered by the above remarks when the poster has no idea of a person’s financial condition or the level of his annual charitable giving.

Gray areas do exist in most subjects and those right of center are not all extremists, likewise, on the left.

  • jt on March 15 at 8:28 p.m.

    Hey Don,

Should similar questions be asked about social security and other programs for the elderly and disabled?

If you outlive the actuarial estimates should your benefits be cut or stopped? If your health declines in interesting ways and your number of prescriptions increases should you be denied? When your level of benefit exceeds your contribution should you be cut off?

We could go on and on…

The question becomes what are your priorities? Is it people or something else?

  • greenlibertarian on March 16 at 12:46 a.m.

    But CB pounces anyway:

Cabbage Boy on March 15 at 2:35 p.m.

Sit on all the councils you want, seems to be the liberal solution. I have tried that, but prefer actually helping people rather than talking about it.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but since I don’t recall DFO being directly involved in any primarily government related councils regarding poverty, he was in fact referring to his service at his church and dealing with those benevolent requests from fellow church-goers who are having, and continue to have a very hard time getting a job and thus keeping a roof over their heads.

That’s actually known as “actually helping people.”, boy. No government or liberal/conservatives involved whatsoever.

At least that’s the way I read it, which seemed logical.

CB, in his infinite zeal to bash all things government related, sees the word “councils” and assumes it’s some liberal big government commie pinko thing that is destroying the country by pandering to free-loaders and deadbeats, you know, handing out government candy, like “they” do all the time.

When in fact, it is LOGICAL to presume DFO was talking about councils at his church that are tasked with deciding how the church’s limited funds can assist the needy in these difficult times. And that being involved in that process has provided information about how people really are suffering in the economy, unable to get jobs, and so yes, they do need that unemployment extension to help tide them over.

Fo’ shame, Cabbage Boy. Man up, and A poll o gize.

What would Jesus or your most holy Pope do, huh?

Take the gigantic log out of your eye, or remain a hypocrite.
