From FRAN FRIED to Romansko.com: This is something that’s been on the back of my mind for a long time
— the media’s use of the acronym “GOP” to describe the Republican Party. I know it makes things easier for copy editors like me in an era of narrowed web widths, but simply: Isn’t “Grand Old Party” a form of editorializing? (And “Just because it’s always been done that way” isn’t a legit response …) More here.
Question: Well, should the media refer to the Republican Party as “GOP”?
Norther on February 03 at 12:21 p.m.
When the republican party’s own website is gop.org, yes, using the initals is absolutely fine.
duroc on February 03 at 12:26 p.m.
Should right-wing blowhards be allowed to call the Democratic Party the “Democrat” Party?
At least the GOP is something the Republicans chose for themselves. I fail to see a problem with it. It’s effective shorthand, just like the iconography of the elephant and the donkey.
duroc on February 03 at 12:27 p.m.
And yes, as Norther points out, it’s obviously not something that’s keeping the Republican Party awake at night.
kamm on February 03 at 12:29 p.m.
If it doesn’t bother the party, it shouldn’t be a concern for others. I’m sure the GOP would pursue the issue to the end of the earth, finally blaming on the liberal Democrats and their agenda, if it was a problem.

It’s editorializing? Why? Because you’re calling them grand? Or because you’re calling them old?
Sisyphus on February 03 at 12:42 p.m.
I have other names if they need some help. And you bet Republicans lose sleep over branding. The full extent of their solution providing abilities is re-naming things and/or demonizing.

Not any worse than using the term,”progressive” for dems.

Re: @duroc’s comment, while “English as the official language” GOPers should, of course, be “allowed” to use the incorrect adjectival form of “Democrat”, I think the press should also randomly drop two letters from the correct adjectival form of “Republican” and just call them “Publican” whenever they do so.
Norther on February 03 at 1:37 p.m.
@Bubblehead - can we at least get an apostrophe before Publican? You know, like ‘publican.
What is the proper term to address a Democratic Party member (did I do that right?)
Are they Democrats? Is DNC still cool?
Bubblehead on February 03 at 2:02 p.m.
Yes, an individual is a Democrat. Used as an adjective, however, the correct form is “Democratic”. It’s like “robot”; you don’t say “The robot moved in a robot manner”, it’s a “robotic” manner. Likewise, a Democrat belongs to the Democratic Party, and the Senate, having more Democrats than Republicans, has a Democratic majority. I know… English is a confusing language. If you get confused about if it’s the “Democrat Party” or “Democratic Party”, you can just refer to their website. It has several examples of the proper usage of “Democrat” and “Democratic” in the Official English Language.

I remember reading someplace that “Grand Old Party” came from the nickname of William Gladstone in Britain, “the Grand Old Man.” Apparently, the economic policy promoted by the U.S. Republicans in the late 19th Century was very similar to the British Liberalism espoused by Gladstone, hence the play on the two names.

LOL! Still hung up on that? Tell me, where does that usage occur? And the GOP had its share of progressives, before the right wing ran them out of the party. If you miss progressives in your party then wok to get rid of the regressives who’ve taken control.

Republicans aren’t as sensitive as Democrats are about their branding, it was changed from Democrat to Democratic Party sometime during the Clinton Administration as I recall. No doubt from some Polysci Study Group at some elite Institution. How about shortening it similar to GOP to DOP ( Democrats On Parade ) as in “this is your brain on” :)
