TGIF Wild Card — 2.12.12

I'm grumpy today because my neighbor let her barking dog out into the back yard at 4:15 this morning. She's done this on two days, at 5 and 6 a.m., in the past week. Mild weather has brought on problem with that ever-barking mutt earlier in the year than usual. You'd think she'd get the message after I rang her doorbell at almost midnight Monday after the dog had been barking for a couple of hours. It might be time to sick animal control on her. But I hate doing that. Why. Can't. People. With. Barking. Dogs. Figure. Out. That. They. Annoy. Others? Now for your Wild Card …

Hopefully Animal Control is feeling better, and you can sic them on her if need be.

But I feel your pain. I’m an even less-nice person than usual if my sleep is disturbed. Two or three days in one week would send me over the top. Do you have her phone number, to save the trouble of going outside to ring the doorbell? (Not to mention avoiding the possibility of armed confrontation.)

One option (although you have to weigh the trade off between laying out some of your cash vs. the price of neighborly relationships) is to buy one of those wireless anti-barking devices. They look like a bird house and you put it up in a tree or something as close to the property line in a tree, etc. facing towards the dog area.

We wanted to cut down on our dogs barking when there were a lot of campers and activities at the camp and it really did the trick.

We have one of those too Dan… It works pretty well but our neighbor’s dog has developed a bit of immunity from it… maybe it’s time to change the batteries…

The obnoxious dogs in our neighborhood (owned by the obnoxious neighbors - go figure!) are a block and a half away, although it sounds like 10 feet away at 3 am. How’s the range on those devices, Bent and Dan? Can I use it like a directional microphone, and just point it towards the offending (and offensive) yard?

Dogie Laxatives in some treats! Works every time!!!

I used one of the wall unit no-bark devices on my chihuahua-it worked great for a month or two. There’s comes a time when the dog becomes tolerant of the high pitched noise :(

Duroc… I think you maybe out of range… it seems to work best in the 25-50 yard range

Do shock collars work? Anyone call the cops on the neighbors?

  • LoLo on February 10 at 1:39 p.m.

Recently saw a misdemeanor barking dog charge come through our office for a similar situation. Yes, I would definitely call animal control and get things rolling. If you’ve already tried to peacefully approach your neighbor without results, you’re really left with little choice. It’s too bad that she has such little regard for her neighbors.

the barking collars work pretty good, DFO, but you have to convince your neighbor to use it… I’d call the cops…

I had a neighbor who had a barking/howling mixed breed on a chain next to my bedroom. Her bedroom, of course, was on the opposite side of her property.
I talk with her a couple of times without success.
My next action was to march over to her house in the middle if the night, pound like crazy on her door until she answered and calmly tell her each time the dog interrupted my sleep, I would be interrupting hers to report the incident.
    It worked after a week.
Legally, I think continued annoyance barking can’t last more than 15min (?) before the owner can be ticketed for disturbing the peace.

How do you get the neighbor to wear a shock collar?

Didn’t see anything on this, DFO.

In brief: Camp Easton sale clears first hurdle

The Spokane-area Boy Scouts of America executive board has approved the proposed sale of Camp Easton in exchange for a new camp on the west shore of Lake Coeur d’Alene.

That vote is one of two votes needed before the full board begins final negotiations with Arizona-based Discovery Land Co.

@ Green Lib re: “Didn’t see anything on this, DFO.”

I believe I had it yesterday morning. First thing. Too slammed to look for it now …

At least, Dave; you aren’t dealing with an idiot “brother” who threatens your inheritance if he can’t get his way on selling the house.

Barking dogs and annoying neighbors are easier to deal with, you can believe it.

  • chatterbox on February 10 at 6:16 p.m.

We have a neighbor who has 3 dogs. One large lab-type that is left outside to bark and bark and bark. He barks at passing vehicles, people walking by, us if we’re out front doing yard work or walking to the mailbox. And he barks to garner some attention.
They also have 2 small “snack” dogs that once let out, antagonize the bigger dog, run around and bark at each other, again, us, if we are out in the front, or just to hear the sound of their own bark.

  • mrd on February 10 at 7:51 p.m.

Many dog owners have no resoect for their neighbors, whether it be noise or poop in the yard. Call animal control, she had her chance.

  • shyone on February 12 at 9:29 a.m.

I woke up this morning looking for reasons to be thankful. After reading the dog barking comments, I must reflect that all four neighbors surrounding our back yard have dogs, including our two, and we all take care to honor the unspoken canine curfew. Thank you to all who are considerate of each other’s need for rest!
