Weekend Wild Card — 2.24.12

Local politics are almost in full bloom in North Idaho, with incumbents and challengers announcing intent to run for office. Filing begins Monday, I believe, and continues through March 9. While election officials fill out the lineup cards, you'll have to start thinking about party affiliation. I'd urge all Independents, unaffiliated, & even some Democrats to consider signing on as Republicans. So their votes will count in races where there will be no Democrats running in the general election, especially for local county and legislative offices. Now for your weekend Wild Card …

Violating the sacred party oath, why… that’s blasphemy. The Horror.

    ;)

Has anyone heard if Rep mcmillian in running in the new district 7

  • jmrusche on February 25 at 11:24 a.m.

    DFO,

I take exception to your request that democrats register as republican.

We may not be successful, but we are going to try to field a good choice to represent the community values in as many places as possible. Why should democrats and unaffiliated voters try to save the republicans from themselves?

  • fortboise on February 25 at 11:44 a.m.

Interesting question, Jim. The practical answer, and what I imagine motivated Dave’s exhortation was that we may end up with a Republican, so it’s in our best interests to support the best one.

Republican’s stated motivation for closing primaries was to allow them to select even more extreme candidates than what they were getting. They sure know how to beggar the imagination, making the argument for “flexibility” in affiliation more strongly than I possibly could.

When the decision of which party to select for primary voting was private, I made it privately, based on what races were on the ballot in my precinct, city, district, etc. Uncontested elections don’t matter in the primary, of course, and my goal was to try to get the best candidates into office after the general election.

Rod Beck’s and Norm Semanko’s ideas of how things should be do not change my motivation to maximize the quality of elected officials. My party affiliation may change from time to time.

2:30 in Bayview and the temp just dropped to 31 degrees. It’s snowing heavy and hard. RE: dems choosing to vote republican. You wouldn’t be saving the GOP from themselves. You would possibly return sanity to this sandbox we all live in.

  • speaker on February 25 at 3:08 p.m.

DFO,consider that your promoting fraud ! And at least dishonesty. In democratic states you see the republicans being honest about, who they are ! Are you promoting people to be liers.

  • hhuseland on February 25 at 3:19 p.m.

There is no fraud in declaring for which ever party you choose voluntarily. Liar is spelled with an a.

  • Spudbob on February 25 at 3:28 p.m.

… and “you are” is abbreviated as “you’re” … and questions usually end with what is called a “question mark”…and your comment is very confusing. What in the heck are you trying to say?

  • nic on February 25 at 3:47 p.m.

    Is speaker kage’s alter ego?

  • yabetcha on February 25 at 3:53 p.m.

Yeah, and why does he avatar himself as “speaker”. Well, I guess that’s better than “writer” :)

  • Dennis on February 25 at 3:54 p.m.

Looks like someone gave that chimp another keyboard. The least they could have done was unplug it’s computer.

  • nic on February 25 at 3:56 p.m.

Defining fraud: deceit, trickery, sharp practice, or breach of confidence, perpetrated for profit or to gain some unfair or dishonest advantage.

Can a democrat earn a profit by signing up as a republican? If there aren’t any democrats running for a particular seat, then how can other democrats gain some unfair advantage by voting in the republican primary?

a particular instance of such deceit or trickery: mail fraud; election frauds.
Look up election fraud for me. It includes stuff like registering dead people to vote, voting at multiple polling sites in one election, using a commercial address as your residential address the vote in a race you’d otherwise be ineligible to vote in, voter intimidation, submitting both a live vote and a mail in vote, etc. Claiming to belong to one party when your beliefs would probably better align with a different party is not election fraud.

  • nic on February 25 at 4:00 p.m.

I don’t say this often, but yabetcha deserves a gold star for that last comment of his.

  • Stickman on February 25 at 7:30 p.m.

I agree with yabetcha for once. As for this new person, named speaker, what’s up with that. nic, I will give yabetcha a gold star as well. He deserves one once in awhile. I always give him sh*t, and feel bad afterwards, but he really is a good guy. Except in politics that is.

  • Stickman on February 25 at 7:33 p.m.

And nic, you’re right, I do think he is Kage’s alter ego. I promised him a day or so ago not to get on his case anymore after he didn’t show up for blogfest. I guess I will just have to try harder.

  • hhuseland on February 25 at 7:35 p.m.

For those interested, Washington beat State in a close finish with Washington coming back from a 13 point deficit. Gonzaga Beat San Diego earlier.

  • Aaron on February 25 at 7:43 p.m.

i had a good laugh from yabetcha’s post earlier-he/she makes a great point!

Anyone else caught by surprise by that wallop of a snow storm today? I had no idea what to expect.

  • Stickman on February 25 at 7:46 p.m.

I got distracted when I saw this thread. My original intent was to talk about birds. On a day when the weather is really like what we expect from a winter day, I saw more robins than I have ever seen in my life. Not hundreds, but thousands along Front Street and in front of my house. They are hungry and can’t figure out this weather we are having lately. They are looking for special trees that have food. And they find them. I wish I could have taken more pictures of them. I know some have mentioned the robins coming early, but this was something you had to be here to believe. I was astounded, and I am using a soft word. I doubt I will ever see what I saw today right around my house. I was truly amazed.

  • Stickman on February 25 at 7:49 p.m.

casino: I love the wallop, and knew it was coming. I only wish it was much stronger than it was. I love snow, and what it does for me. Perfect quiet at times, and no one around. I guess everyone is inside watching whatever excites them. I am always outside, and that excites me.

  • nic on February 25 at 7:52 p.m.

Days like today make me wish the SR had a thumbs up/thumbs down feature in their comments threads. Several would have gotten a thumbs up from me including Herb, betcha, and Stick. Dang this was (is) an entertaining thread.

  • Stickman on February 25 at 8:02 p.m.

Thanks for the thumbs up nic. I strive to make fairly good comments, but sometimes, I think I am too hard on myself, hence the self imposed cooler. Which I actually love, as it gives me time to reflect and think about what I am really saying. I also think I may be too hard on myself sometimes, but that also makes me think that much harder if I am saying the right thing. I never want to offend anyone, but I know I do at times. Never my intent, it’s just the moment. I love the family, and will always come here. If I talk too much, it’s because you are all I have. Period.

  • Stickman on February 25 at 8:18 p.m.

Plus, the snow was quite beautiful today. Are we finally having some winter, I sure hope so.

  • Bent on February 25 at 9:22 p.m.

I hear you on the robins Stickman… we had swarms and swarms of them shooting from tree to tree all day it was crazy to watch them getting blown sideways by the winds …

  • hhuseland on February 25 at 10:44 p.m.

You see, Nic? I’m not always a reactionary. As a matter of fact, some things I can’t talk about will happen perhaps where the wackos will vilify me. But then they do already, along with some left leaning people that do not recognize that not everything is black and white, but life full of gray areas.

  • fortboise on February 26 at 5:35 p.m.

Watched a great episode of POV last night, out of our recorded stash: If a Tree Falls.

Subtitled “A story of the Earth Liberation Front.” Powerful film. I see it received a nomination for an Academy Award, which I’d say is well-deserved.

  • Stickman on February 26 at 6:33 p.m.

thanks fort for the link. I almost never read links, but I liked this one and will definitely watch it. One of my favorite books has to do with tress and saving them if we can. It was by Julia ‘Butterfly’ Hill, a woman that spent over two years in a tree over 250 feet up to save it. If I lasted even one day in that tree that would have been amazing. Thanks to all of those that try to save this earth.

  • Stickman on February 26 at 6:37 p.m.

I meant trees. I just went to Netflix and it is coming very soon. Thanks again.

  • yabetcha on February 26 at 7:02 p.m.

Everyone it seems is talking about the thousands of Robins all over town. The topic is getting its fair share here. I understand that much of it is the Robins move towards and with a steady 37 degree F. which allows the earth to soften and coax the earthworm to the surface.

Sure wish there was an animal that we could use to predict the outcome of presidential politics.

  • nic on February 26 at 7:56 p.m.

“Sure wish there was an animal that we could use to predict the outcome of presidential politics.”

We did. It was called the dodo bird, but I hear they went extinct.

  • Arch_Druid on February 26 at 9:29 p.m.

I would have gone to the old address yesterday to begin the process of cleaning up, washing up, and collecting stuff to eventually drive up to my current address and off load. But, I decided to stay in just because of the weather. Heard that the weather caused a whole lot of collisions.

I don’t plan on registering to vote until next week. That is after I have gotten my potted orchard, earth boxes, etc. out of the old place and established around my current address.

By the time of the general election, I will have been in my new residence more than six months. Don’t think I’ll have the opportunity to vote before then. But, I will have an R after my name.

  • hhuseland on February 26 at 10:07 p.m.

So, I just don’t know where to start. I still do not respect those of the left that are knee jerk black and white types and never will. I am going to target those districts that are wackos to the far right of my party. I am, however, not a RINO. The ones that are, are the remnants of the John Birch Society, the Constitution party and perhaps the Anarchists and their spawn. For those that are clinging to their party roots, you need to concentrate on the above mentioned gray areas. Do you want to go down in flames? Or would you prefer to influence a republican race. If you choose not to participate, then you are part of the problem, not the solution.

  • duroc on February 27 at 6:44 a.m.

Agree with you strongly, Herb. What do you suggest for more independent-minded independents like myself? I was driven away from the GOP because of the same black/white mentality that you complain about on the hard-left (and I agree, it’s on both ends of the spectrum, but the hard-left doesn’t really exist in Idaho, so I rarely worry about them taking over here).

Should we independent moderates register as Republicans to moderate the GOP? Should we join the Democrats to help build their ranks and provide an alternative to the current Idaho GOP? Or should we cling to our independence, and refuse to take part in this closed-primary nonsense?
