Fake Cancer Claim Scams Local

A 14-year-old girl said she has cancer and later dies. The problem? She didn't die. She never had cancer. She also never existed. Phaedra Hansen, pictured in KXLY photo, goes back and forth between being angry and sad. She volunteers for the Ronan Thompson Foundation, dedicated to finding a cure for neuroblastoma. So when a young girl said she was fighting for her life Hansen, who has a soft spot for kids, immediately wanted to help. "So many are dying now it just breaks my heart," she said. But Hansen never thought someone would take advantage of that. "A lot of me was really sad. A lot of me was really mad," Hansen said/Anusha Roy, KXLY. More here.

Question: How do you avoid getting plucked by scam artists?
