Betsy Russell/Eye on Boise posts: I was contacted in April by State Legislatures Magazine, which is published by the National Conference of State Legislatures, about writing a piece about Idaho's school-reform fight for their fall issue, a big-picture piece looking at how the reforms came to be introduced, what they do, the players supporting and opposed to the changes, and how the politics played out in Boise that led to the measures passing the Legislature. I don't often do freelance work (no time), but this seemed worthwhile, my newspaper approved, and I agreed. I took a week's vacation to do the interviews, and filed the story in June. It's now out, and at this point, from the thick of the campaign, it's interesting to step back and look at this whole thing from a big-picture perspective.
