Another Local GOP Resolution

When the Kootenai County GOP gathers for its monthly meeting Tuesday night, it will also discuss this proposed resolution:

Whereas, the FERPA (Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act) laws state, "Schools may disclose, without consent directory information such as a student's name, address, telephone number, date and place of birth, honors & awards, and dates of attendance," and, whereas the FERPA laws go on to state that schools must "allow parents and eligible students a reasonable amount of time to request that  the school not disclose directory information about them"; therefore:

  • Resolved, that the Kootenai County Repulican Central Committee urges parents to become acquained with their rights to opt out of the sharing of their children's personal data; and
  • Resolved, that the Kootenai County Republican Central Committee urges our state legislators to prepare legislation requiring school districts to provide each parent with full explanation of the FERPA laws, along with an "opt out" form.

Thoughts?
