Officer Faced Knife Wielder Before

The Spokesman-Review

At 1:13 p.m. Friday, April 26, 2013, Huckleberries Online posted this video of Officer Spencer Mortensen successfully arresting an arson suspect who pulled a knife on him near Kootenai Health the previous night. Coeur d'Alene Police have identified Mortensen as the officer involved in the fatal shooting of a Dalton Gardens man with a knife Sunday. You can see the report of the April 26 post below.

A Coeur d'Alene officer encountered an uncooperative suspect in a possible arson at 9:25 p.m. Thursday who pulled a knife on him. Following is part of the news release circulated by Sgt. Christie Wood this afternoon:

Officer Mortenson approached Richman and asked for his ID. He immediately became uncooperative and used profanity toward the officer. He became aggressive and stated he had a knife. Richman pulled a dark colored 3” blade knife out of his pocket. Officer Mortensen pulled his service revolver and issued several commands for Richman to drop the knife. At one point he dropped the knife on the ground in front of him but refused to move away from it. It appeared to the officer that Richman was considering picking it up again. Additional officers arrived on scene with a less lethal shotgun. They gave commands for Richman to get on the ground and he eventually complied. Full report on CPD Facebook page here.
