Race Focuses On Treasurer’s Miscues

Republican Treasurer Ron Crane said Idahoans should vote for him on Election Day because of his 16-year record in office. Crane's Democratic challenger, Deborah Silver (pictured), said voters should pick her based on Crane's record, too. Silver points to problems in the Treasurer's Office cited in several state audits about Crane's misuse of taxpayer money and an inappropriate transfer that cost taxpayers $10.2 million as signals that the state needs a new treasurer. "The treasurer should be impeccably honest," Silver said. "We've had some real problems with that." Crane, who pointed out that later audits found most of the problems corrected, said the remaining issues are overblown and that voters should focus on the state's high credit rating and his claim to have earned $1.1 billion for the state and local political subdivisions through investments and interest/Zach Kyle, Idaho Statesman.
