Scout Decision Troubles LDS
Monday’s decision by the Boy Scouts of America to allow gay men and women to serve as Scoutmasters has drawn a variety of reactions. Gay rights advocates called the decision window dressing, since the decision still allows religious organizations to set up their own rules barring gays in church-sponsored Scouting groups. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued a statement indicating it was “deeply troubled” by the decision, warning “the century-long association with Scouting will need to be examined.” The church’s statement has leaders in the Grand Teton Council of the Boy Scouts awaiting a decision by Mormon leaders in Salt Lake City. Because the very existence of the Council, where upward of 90 percent of the more-than 22,000 of the region’s Scouts are in Mormon troops, could hang in the balance/Idaho Statesman. More here.
