Land Transfer Will Benefit Elite 20

In an op-ed article for the Idaho Statesman, Travis Long says there's appeal to the push by Tea Party legislators for state control of public lands. You have to dig deeper to find out what's really going on here, the Idaho Deer Alliance official writes. The crusade really is about ceding control of fed lands to the elite and not average Idahoans.

Denney's 1st 6 Months Are Quiet

I was expecting Lawerence Denney, the highly partisan former House Speaker, to begin his tenure as Secretary of State by ruling the former office of Pete Cenarrusa and Ben Ysursa with an iron, partisan hand. But Denney has been a surprise so far. As Bill Dentzer of the Idaho Statesman reports, he has gone about his business quietly, efficiently.

Lynn Borders, former fire chief of the Post Falls Fire Protection District, has thrown his hat in the ring for the seat of retiring Post Falls Councilman Skip Hissong. Borders is the second local person to declare his candidacy for a City Council position. Dan English has announced he will run for the Coeur d'Alene council.

Prairie Poplars Part Of Biofuel Study

Seventy acres of poplars on the Rathdrum Prairie rustled in a hot, summer breeze, flashing silvery-green leaves. Someday, cars and trucks could be running on fuel made from the trees. A $40 million research project, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is studying poplars’ potential to produce cellulose-based biofuels.

Trial In Falcon Killing Begins

The first day of Patti MacDonald's trial in Kootenai County District Court centered around a phrase and a scarf. MacDonald, 60, is accused of attacking a hunter's falcon in January near the site of a Halloween corn maze attraction in Hauser. On Monday, a jury…

Plenty To Do On The 4th

Saturday will be a day of patriotism as Fourth of July events in Coeur d'Alene start with the annual American Heroes Parade. The parade begins at 11 a.m. on Sherman Avenue and 15th Street, moving west toward Government Way. Question: How do you plan to spend the 4th of July?

Hump Day Wild Card -- 7.1.15

We've turned the calendar to the second half of 2015 -- and the season for dreadful tattoos has begun. If you don't believe me, head to the waterfront and check out the baking flesh. More heat = less clothes = tattoos on parade. The more...

Just Wondering ...

I'm wondering if ignite cda (the urban renewal agency formerly known as Lake City Development Corp) is catching guff for re-branding because, among other things, Coeur d'Alene residents are tired of the rebrandings? I don't like Kootenai Health all that much. The hospital will remain KMC, or Kootenai Medical Center, for me for awhile yet.

'Dukes Of Hazzard' Reruns Yanked 56

There's quite a bit of hubbub on my Facebook feed re: the decision by Warner Bros. to yank "The Dukes of Hazzard" reruns. The Confederate flag on the iconic "General Lee," the 1969 Dodge Charger featured in many Dukes' car chases, was the deal breaker. Some say that the decision to yank the program is PC run amok. What say you?

Scuba: If You're Too Cheap, Walk

Commenter Scuba Steve defends the move by North Idaho College to charge $5 for parking on its campus during the 4th of July. Scuba sez NIC is charging the fee to pay for extra security, custodial costs & restroom supplies. If you don't want to pay the fee, sez Steve, walk a little farther to get to Coeur d'Alene's water front.

Marijuana Now Legal In Oregon

In Oregon today, recreational marijuana is now legal. Oregon became the fourth state -- all in the West -- to legaliza marijuana, following Colorado, Washington and Alaska. Why do you suppose all that states that have legalized marijuana are in the western part of our country?
