Cda Press editorial: Because the truth matters 12

There is no joy or sense of vindication in exposing Rachel Dolezal. Just sadness. Dolezal is purporting to be what she almost certainly is not: a mixed-race African-American woman. The two people who should know her ethnicity - her biological parents - swear their daughter is caucasian. And they have the birth certificate backing up their claim. Read more below. Does this story matter to you? Why or why not?

TGIF Wild Card 6.12.15

I'll be scooting out a bit early this afternoon to sign copies of "War Bonds: Love Stories From the Greatest Generation" at the South Hill Hastings in Spokane. I'll be there from 4-6-ish. Meanwhile, the Rachel Dolezal story went viral last night. In fact, she was trending #1 on Twitter, though probably not for reason's she'd hoped.

What was your first concert? 37

Came across an old scrapbook while cleaning out a closet and found this concert stub from a Ronnie Milsap concert circa 1983 or 84. It was my first concert and my friend made me go with her. Turned out to be a great show.

Shock players implicated in theft in Las Vegas

The police report detailing an alleged theft by members of the Spokane Shock football team backs up claims made by two women who came forward last week to say they had money stolen from their purses on May 23 in a Las Vegas lounge. The Spokesman-Review on Thursday obtained a copy of the report which says a security video clearly shows Shock player Mark Jackson, 26, taking money from three purses and handing some of the cash over to two other players, who were seated across the table.

For the last 35 years, Shirley Johnson has been producing distinctive pottery glazed with a mixture that includes some Mount St. Helens ash. (Jesse Tinsley)

Potter turns ash into beauty

I really enjoyed spending time with Shirley Johnson. At 83 she's still creating beautiful pottery using Mt. St. Helen ash in the glaze. Do you own a piece of this pottery? Thirty-five years ago, when Mount St. Helens erupted, a layer of ash covered the region like a grimy, gray blanket. It was dirty. It was dismal. And it was a pain to clean up. While most residents bemoaned the ugliness of the ash-coated landscape, Shirley Johnson saw a glimmer of beauty in the grime.

Poverty in North Idaho

Today, the Cda Press features an article on the cultural divide in Bonner County. How great do you think the divide is between the haves and the have-nots in North Idaho? "... beneath Sandpoint's well-planned economic and community development, highly-rated schools, and trendy and increasingly gentrified outer shell, exists a completely different culture, one that has nothing to do with adventure and fine dining and everything to do with economic survival."

Rachel Dolezal, Spokane’s new NAACP president, meets with Joseph M. King of King’s Consulting, left, and Dr. Scott Finnie, director and senior professor of Eastern Washington University’s Africana Education Program, in January 2015 in Cheney. (Tyler Tjomsland)

The second "War Pigs" letter sent to Dolezal was an apology, not a threat  38

Much of the recent news about local NAACP President Rachel Dolezal was sparked by the news that a letter allegedly dropped in the NAACP's P.O. box had no postal date stamp or barcode, raising questions about whether the letter had been delivered to the P.O. box at all. Forensics did reveal some unidentifiable male DNA on the letter, but as of yesterday, the Spokane police suspended the case pending further investigation.
