Chairwoman Backs ‘Of Mice & Men’

On her Coeur d'Alene trustee Facebook page, Chairwoman Christa Hazel posts: "'Of Mice and Men,' by John Steinbeck, is an American classic that is taught in numerous high schools in our country. It's been used here since 2002. I am opposed to restricting the book in the 9th grade classrooms. There are opt-out policies in place for parents who have an issue with its language or themes. I trust the professional judgement of teachers to conduct a responsible conversation in an academic setting."

Question: With an opt-out policy in place, should the Board of Trustees endorse a recommendation by an ad hoc committee that limit the use of Steinbeck's "Of Mice & Men" for ninth-grade reading use?
