Censorship Group Eyes CdA Battle

The National Coalition Against Censorship is following the twin controversies involving the Coeur d'Alene School District -- a proposal to ban all R-rated movies from use in district classrooms and a recommendation by the Ad Hoc Curriculum Committee to remove John Steinbeck's "Of Mice & Men" from a required reading list for ninth grades. The coalition's Kids' Right to Read Program confronts challenges to books in schools and public libraries, advocates against book rating systems, and opposes censorship in school curricula. Sarah Hoffman, Youth Free Expression program manager, emailed Huckleberries: "We’ve been following the story of the Coeur d’Alene school district’s debate on whether or not to ban 'Of Mice and Men,' as well as the proposed ban on R-rated movies, which I know you’ve been writing about." The coalition plans to review minutes or a recording of the School Board meeting Monday before taking action. Again, Hoffman: "I have to say that I’m very glad to see there’s been a vigorous discussion, and I’m hopeful the Board will make the right decision come June."
