No decision yet on death penalty

Prosecutors will have until after the New Year to decide whether to seek the death penalty for Jonathan Renfro, the man accused of killing a Coeur d’Alene Police sergeant in May. Kootenai County District Court Judge Lansing Hayes on Wednesday extended the deadline to Jan. 4 for prosecutors to announce their intentions to try the slaying of Sgt. Greg Moore as a capital crime. Renfro, 27, sat shackled in a Kootenai County courtroom for the entirety of the 10-minute hearing Wednesday morning. Idaho law requires prosecutors to decide within 60 days of an arraignment if they’ll pursue the death penalty. On Sept. 30, Renfro did not answer when he was asked for a plea in the first-degree murder case. Without Hayes’ extension, the deadline would have expired Friday/Kip Hill, SR. More here.
