Aggressive elk hurting people 

Elk are usually more aggressive in the fall when searching for a mate. But what is surprising this year is that more elk are turning that aggression toward people, which has led to injuries and property damage.

The body found last week in the Roman Nose Lake area west of Naples in Boundary County has been identified as 53-year-old Post Falls [Click and drag to move] resident Brent D. Barron, according to a press release issued this afternoon by the Boundary County Sheriff's Office.

'Instant Racing' parlor closes 

An instant horse racing parlor in eastern Idaho says it has been forced to shutter its doors and lay off 70 employees, as a result of a recent Supreme Court decision that made its machines illegal. The Post Register reports that Double Down Betting, Sports Bar and Grill announced its decision Wednesday.

BCSO report details violent fight 

A Bonner County woman was able to call 911 and grab a gun during a violent fight with her husband on the Spirit Lake Cutoff Road Tuesday night. Her husband had gathered what he thought were all the phones in the home. He was planning to kill the family and then himself, according to a sheriff's news release. He ended up dead.

Randy Stapilus/Ridenbaugh Press writes in his daily "First Take" online column that the mass shootings that are epidemic in this country just got personal. His sister was an instructor in an adjoining building at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Ore., when the killer attacked. He wonders when mass shootings will become personal for everyone.

JACC brings classical guitarist to PFHS 

Brad Richter (pictured) and Viktor Uzur will present a live in concert at the Jacklin Arts and Culture Center in Post Falls at 7 p.m. Friday. Richter is a renown classical guitarist, has taught his musical craft to Post Falls High students, as a result of grants provided by The JACC. That is the case again this year.

Here's the latest screwball to shoot his way into the public consciousness -- Chris Harper Mercer, shown on a Facebook photo post with a rifle. This monster's rampage at Umpqua Community College brings the death toll in mass shootings for this year alone in this country to 294 in 274 days. Is this now a way of life for us?

Vatican: Pope didn't endorse Davis 16 

The Vatican said Friday that Pope Francis did not specifically seek a meeting with Kentucky clerk Kim Davis, and that their encounter did not represent an endorsement of her views. Davis is the Rowan County clerk who became a grassroots conservative hero after refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses.
