SR: Solons must fix 'loser-pays' ruling

In this morning's editorial, The Spokesman-Review comments: "Idahoans will be the losers if the Legislature does not quickly clarify rules that could make unsuccessful litigants responsible for all court costs and lawyer fees; potentially tens of thousands of dollars."

For those keeping score at home ...

... The Coeur d'Alene Resort Boardwalk is closed due to snow and ice. I saw a sign hanging from a chain across the entrance during the noon hour. I was in the middle of my first Walk Along the Waterfront in some time. The sunshine…

Idaho’s college go-on numbers have dropped, but the state’s college enrollment keeps trending upward. Nearly 99,300 students attended Idaho colleges and universities this fall, according to a new report from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center. Idaho’s numbers defy national trends. Kevin Richert, IdahoEdNews reports.

Are you ready for Christmas?

After greeting me in the waiting room this morning, my doc's nurse asked a pleasant question that you hear all the time: Are you ready for Christmas? I wasn't sure how to answer. Does it mean: Are all the gifts purchased? Does it mean: Am I mentally ready for another Christmas Day, with all its memories. Q: Are you ready for Christmas?

Cops: Man beat debtor, left him naked

A Boise man has been accused of abducting a man who owed him money, beating him and leaving him on the side of the road in freezing temperatures wearing nothing but socks. The Idaho Statesman reports that a 46-year-old man was booked into the Ada county Jail on Monday on charges of aggravated battery, robbery and second-degree kidnapping.

Female docs better for you than males?

When a patient goes to the best hospital, he or she usually hopes for a doctor who is knowledgeable and experienced. Something else to wish for? A woman physician. That's because female doctors may on average be better than their male counterparts at treating patients. CNN reports. Q: Is your doctor a female?

Poll: We park nose first

In Tuesday's Poll, a plurality of Hucks Nation said it parked cars front end first. Only a little over a quarter back into a parking spot. Today's Poll: Do you support the city of Coeur d'Alene's decision to crack down on parking scofflaws?

Would You Rather ...? 12

Would you rather ... Stay in Idaho and enjoy a White Christmas? Or vacation in Hawaii and skip the white Christmas? H/T: Cindy Hval, for introducing the "Would You Rather" idea on a podcast with 2 of her boys -- and to school Trustee Tom Hearn who will miss the white Christmas this year because he's in Hawaii.

Snowblower Standard Time? 23

I've read the Facebook post of several friends with snowblowers. Some say that 7 a.m. is too early to fire up the snowblowers. Others aren't sure. What do you think? When is an appropriate time to begin snow-blowing your driveway and sidewalks, without incurring the wrath of your sleep neighbors?

Salvation Army pots yield gold coins

Gold coins are cropping up in Salvation Army kettles throughout the region. A Salvation Army worker found a gold coin in Kalispell, Mont. Another gold coin was found in Oregon's Willamette Valley. The late was a 1915 gold bullion coin worth $1,000. Q: How often do you dig out your wallet when you hear a Salvation Army bell ringing?

Wedeln: You can do this, DFO

After reading about the coming change in my duties (which will include writing 5 shorter Huckleberries print columns per week), Wedeln4Hillary2016 offers encouragement. He figures that 10 inches of column spaces equals about 350 to 400 words. And says that'll go by fast if I poach a good comment from Huckleberries. I intend to do so.

Siblings battle for 'piece of heaven' 12

Jeanne Green, who will turn 93 on Jan. 1, always said she wanted the 400 acres of lakefront, forested property on Lake Pend Oreille that her family homesteaded in 1902 to be conserved as-is and remain in the family. But now the $15 million family property at Camp Bay on Lake Pend Oreille is slated for development and in a dispute among her kids.

Found: Meth, syringes; see: PFPD

The Coeur d'Alene Press had fun with a Facebook post on the Post Falls Police Department site. Seems someone found a "kit" that contained methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia -- and an identification. The department, it seems, will be delighted to return the items to anyone who claims them.

City to crack down on parking scofflaws 34

Those who ignore parking tickets issued to them in Coeur d’Alene will soon face a vehicle boot, and a healthy dose of public shaming. A new ordinance was passed Tuesday night by the Coeur d’Alene City Council that places individuals with four or more unpaid parking tickets more than 45 days old on a publicly published “scofflaw list.”

Parting Shot -- 12.20.16

Spokane photographer Rika Ream traveled to Palouse Falls State Park during last weekend's bitter cold weather to marvel at the ice around the 185-foot waterfall. The scene was spectacular. Daring ice climbers dropped her jaw even farther. She captured this photo of Jess Roskelley of Spokane leading a climb in the fragile ice of the main waterfall.

Wild Card/Tuesday -- 12.20.16 10

I've been driving an Enterprise rental car this week while Gerber Collision & Glass has been removing the deer-caused dint in my 4Runner -- a Nissan Altima. The Altima drives well in the snow, better than my 4Runner, unless I put it in 4-wheel drive. We'll be in the market for a car next year. For Mrs. O. We'll probably opt for a Subaru.

My job it is achangin' 17

As I mentioned recently, my job is going to change somewhat after the first of the year. Instead of writing one, 20-inch column for Sundays, I'll be knocking out 5 of them, of 10 inches apiece. That'll mean a different approach to my blogging. It'll evolve. But I'm planning to blog from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. and then columnize for an hour or so.

What grosses you out? 20

"Nothing on Earth grosses me out more than runny egg yolk" -- Facebook Friend Desiree Janke of Coeur d'Alene. Question: Egg yolks are pretty gross. But anything involving cooked liver, even smothered with onions, grosses me out. How about you. What grosses you out?

When was your last big winter fall?

An unfortunate woman's fall on ice in downtown Coeur d'Alene this afternoon reminds me of falls I've taken in wintry conditions over the past 4 decades. The ones while I learned to ice skate were spectacular. How about you? Care to describe bad falls that you've had from slipping on ice during NW winters?
