Cheers: No tax cuts from Otter

In his weekly Cheers & Jeers column, Opinion Editor Marty Trillhaase of the Lewiston Tribune gives CHEERS ... to Idaho Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter. Trillhaase applauds the recent comment by Otter that he plans to ask for no tax cuts from the 2017 Legislators, However, Trillhaase says, Otter's word is seldom final.

State Sen. Shawn Keough, R-Sandpoint, remained co-chair of the powerful Joint Finance & Appropriations Committee, as the Idaho Senate wrapped up business for the organizational session today. She's the only North Idaho senator to be named to chair a Senate committee, although Bob Nonini, Steve Vick and Mary Souza were named vice chairs.

Nearly 2,000 Idaho state employees were in the process of being converted from salaried to hourly wages ahead of a new federal rule on overtime pay set to take effect Dec. 1, reports Zach Kyle/Statesman. That all changes with a Texas federal judge granted an injunction against the changes.

NIC settles suit in rape claim 13 

North Idaho College has settled a lawsuit filed by a young women who charged that she was gang-raped as a 17-year-old freshman at an off-campus party in 2013, and that rather than addressing the incident, the college disciplined her when she began drinking and acting out after the attack.

Still going strong 

I usually note but don't react to birthdays that I see daily on my Facebook feed. But former Hayden mayor Ron McIntire is an exception. Ron turned 80 this week. So what's so special about turning 80? Ron still works 6 days a week at his Super 1 grocery store in Hayden, overseeing a growing chain. I'm fascinated by people who keep on keeping on.
