Update: Jury picked in Samuel case

A jury was selected Tuesday for the murder trial of Eldon Gale Samuel III, the Coeur d’Alene teen accused of killing his father and younger brother in March 2014. Ten men and four women were selected, with two of the 14 serving as alternates in the trial, which is expected to last up to four weeks. SRreporter Scott Maben provides today's report.

Poll: Idaho backs background checks 

Two-thirds of Idahoans support increased background checks for gun purchases, including on Internet and gun show sales, a new Idaho Politics Weekly poll finds. The results come in a new survey conducted in late December before the latest round of mass shootings & President Obama's executive orders on increased background checks.

Legislators get civility training 

Idaho legislators are undergoing civil discourse training today, working with the National Institute for Civil Discourse at the University of Arizona. The institute has worked with 12 other states, but Idaho is the first to schedule a Legislature-wide training session backed by leadership; Maine is soon to be the second.

Jim Obergefell, the lead plaintiff in the landmark Supreme Court case that legalized gay marriage last year, says Kentucky clerk Kim Davis "has the right to be" at President Obama's final State of the Union. ... More oil trains proposed for NIdaho 

Local residents will have a chance to sound off this week on an oil terminal proposed for the Port of Vancouver that would funnel four more oil trains daily though Sandpoint and Spokane. A public hearing on the Vancouver Energy Terminal’s draft environmental statement takes place Thursday evening in Spokane Valley.

Restaurant caters to gun carriers 17 

You have heard of senior and military discounts but have you ever heard of gun carrier discount? Well a North Idaho restaurant is launching a deal to reward gun owners. The Dueling Irons on Schneidmiller Avenue began offering a 15 percent discount to anyone who carries a gun. Taylor Viydo/KREM reports on the unusual restaurant.

In a startling report issued Tuesday morning by the Washington, D.C.-based Violence Policy Center, gun deaths have now surpassed motor vehicle deaths in Idaho—one of 21 states and the District of Columbia that saw more gun deaths than motor vehicle deaths in 2014.

Judge: Idaho trapping regs violate act
