Samuel guilty of 2 counts of murder

A Kootenai County jury took about seven hours Friday to convict a 16-year-old boy of murdering his father and brother in a bloody attack inside their Coeur d’Alene house almost two years ago. Eldon Gale Samuel III was found guilty of first-degree murder for killing 13-year-old Jonathan Samuel and second-degree murder for killing Eldon Samuel Jr.

No bail for Bundy brothers 

A judge at the federal courthouse in Portland Friday denied bail to three of the militants arrested near Burns earlier this week in connection with the armed occupation at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. Judge Stacie Beckerman denied bail to both Ammon and Ryan Bundy, saying both defendants are a flight risk and a danger to the community.

We're almost to the end of January, which means we can start thinking happy thoughts about spring. Recent rains are clearing the snow from my garden spot. I have one last project left to complete my renovation of my garden spot, which runs fence line to fence line across the back of my yard. Can't wait to get started. But I'll have to do so.

Update: Samuel fate in jury's hands

A jury Friday began deliberating whether to find 16-year-old Eldon Gale Samuel III guilty of murdering his younger brother and father in Coeur d’Alene almost two years ago. Samuel is charged with first-degree murder for killing 13-year-old Jonathan Samuel and second-degree murder for killing Eldon Samuel Jr., 46.

State Rep. Heather Scott, R-Blanchard, was awarded the "crow" by legislative colleagues today, for getting just eight votes on her motion to “lay on the table” the conformity bill, HB 425. The tongue-in-cheek gag award is given to the legislaor who gets the least support on a bill or motion.

Idaho County Prosecutor Kirk A. MacGregor said Commission Chairman Jim Chmelik did nothing wrong by voting to set aside ($5,000) for an organization he formed to fight the federal government over control of public lands. The first specialty license plate bill of the year was introduced in the Idaho House Transportation Committee Thursday afternoon, honoring the Orofino High School Maniacs. Rep. Paul Shepherd, R-Riggins, sponsored the measure. He noted the Maniacs have a tremendous fan base in the Clearwater Valley.
