There was no avoiding it, and Fox News Channel didn't really try: Megyn Kelly was the star of the show at Thursday's Republican presidential debate in Des Moines. Kelly, of course, is a big reason that GOP front-runner Donald Trump refused to participate.

Samuel: Closing arguments today

A delay in producing jury instructions moved closing arguments in Eldon Samuel III's trial to today. Lawyers and the judge in the Kootenai County case anticipated closing arguments being delivered Thursday and handing the case off to the jury for a decision. The trial continues at 9 a.m.

Ybarra ask 7.5% ed budget increase 

Idaho state schools Superintendent Sherri Ybarra told lawmakers she wants a new education culture in Idaho. In a nearly hour-long budget presentation on Thursday, Ybarra said her plan would “provide high-quality education while moving way from a very rigid philosophy of over-testing, compliance, and a one-size-fits-all accountability structure.”

Sen. Curt McKenzie, R-Nampa, said today that he’s declined to schedule either a full hearing on minimum wage legislation proposed by Sen. Maryanne Jordan, D-Boise, and Rep. Mat Erpelding, D-Boise, or an introductory hearing, which would allow the bill to be printed and get a bill number.

IRS bill hits gay marriage road block 

The House has just voted 54-15 – with all 14 House Democrats plus Rep. Heather Scott, R-Blanchard, voting no – to return HB 354, the IRS tax conformity bill, to the House Revenue & Taxation Committee. The bill removes now-voided language requiring same-sex married couples to recalculate their Idaho taxes and file separate state returns.

Learning WW2 history from those who made it 11 

Harvard Park Retirement Community buzzed with energy and conversation Friday morning as 40 teens from Spokane Valley Tech and Barker high schools chatted with residents and guests. This was no ordinary field trip. The students have been studying World War II history in a unit launched Dec. 7, the 74th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Ex-Rep. Hart's home auctioned for $182K 

The home of tax-protesting former Idaho state Rep. Phil Hart was auctioned off on the Kootenai County Courthouse steps for back taxes this morning, and sold for $182,000 to a Spokane real estate investor; Hart, who is still living in the log home, attended the auction but didn’t bid. Mahmood Khokhar, the successful bidder, attended the auction.

In his announcement Hearn took issue with several legislative actions taken by Sims, including her opposition to a mental health center that has been built in Coeur d'Alene.

Sumo occupier predicts blood shed 24 

As news came in Tuesday night about the violent arrest of the leaders of the group occupying an Oregon wildlife refuge, an eastern Idaho native who just returned from the scene of the standoff said he firmly believes more bloodshed will follow. Kelly Gneiting also said the heavily armed militants holding the refuge will be victorious.
