Mayor's message re: Dallas killings 

Mayor Steve Widmyer sent this message to all employees this morning in response to the tragedy in Dallas. It said, in part: "I wish I had an answer on how to stop the senseless violence. Unfortunately there isn't one answer. But maybe we can start in our community by promoting the message that we care and support everyone."

Deaths of officers, black men pain Spokane NAACP leader

On Wednesday, Phillip Tyler posted a video expressing his pain and anger at the shooting of a black man by law enforcement in Baton Rouge. On Thursday, Tyler, the president of Spokane’s NAACP chapter, was expressing pain and anger again at the deaths of officers in Dallas during a protest of the recent police-related shootings of two black men.

City to change drug test policies 

"Drug tests for all new city employees are a thing of the past. The Coeur d’Alene City Council decided this week that across-the-board drug screening is no longer required for prospective new hires, but certain positions will still require pre-screening," reports the Coeur d'Alene Press. Suspect: 'Upset at white people' 16 

A military veteran (Micah Johnson) who said his goal was to kill white police officers opened fire Thursday night in downtown Dallas, leaving five officers dead and seven wounded before the police killed him with a remote-controlled explosive delivered by a robot, officials said.

10 states sue over restroom rules 

Ten states sued the federal government Friday over rules requiring public schools to allow transgender students to use restrooms and locker rooms conforming to their gender identity. The suit filed in Nebraska and included nine other states: Arkansas, Kansas, Michigan, Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, South Carolina, South Dakota and Wyoming.

Task force statement on shootings 

The Kootenai County Task Force on Human Relations has issued a statement re: the shootings in Dallas, Texas, Baton Rouge, La., and St. Anthony, Minn. The task force, which originated as a response to the Aryan Nations, is calling for this country to turn away from violence and return to civil discourse.

President Obama on Friday deplored the shooting deaths of five police officers in Dallas, saying there was “no possible justification” for such a “vicious, calculated and despicable attack on law enforcement.” “We are horrified over these events,” he said, “and we stand united with the people and the Police Department in Dallas.”

Gunmen shot and killed five police officers and wounded seven others during a protest over fatal police shootings of black men in other states, authorities said. It appeared to be the deadliest day for U.S. law enforcement since the 2001 terrorist attacks.

In his editorial today, Opinion Editor Marty Trillhaase of the Lewiston Tribune comments on the defiant pose struck by Ron Miller, president of Rocky Mountain Mining Rights. Miller is ready to take on the feds again re: suction dredge mining. Trillhaase reminds Miller that there may be consequences to doing that, now that the Bundy era is over.
