TGIF Wild Card -- 6.24.16 

Gary Graham, the low-key editor of the SR for the past 8 years, has announced his retirement, to take place in September. Gary is a month older than I am. When he leaves, I'll be the oldest person in the newsroom. At least, that's what Gary once told me over lunch. Gary, I believe, is a month older than I. We're both 66.

Sunset-Star Mine cleanup starts at old boom town 

Sunset is one of the forgotten boom towns of Silver Valley. Its school, its general store and its largest employer, the Sunset-Star Silver Mine, faded into the forested landscape decades ago. But the toxic legacy of early 20th century mining practices lingers at the old town site north of Wallace. Superfund cleanup work will begin this summer.

NIC recruits double amputee wrestler

A double-amputee will join North Idaho College’s wrestling team. The school signed Class 6A 2016 wrestling state champion Hassan Hawthorne from Alabama. Hawthorne recently graduated from high school with a 37-0 record in his senior year. He also earned Alabama’s Most Valuable Wrestler for class 6A.

As I mentioned in the Wild Card, I have had 10 editors during my 46 years in the newspaper biz. Here they are: Eddie Booth, Lou Walther, John Fenrich, Paul Zimmerman, Marlon Hanson, George Cecil, Paul Emerson, Chris Peck, Steve Smith & Gary Graham. Graham, who is retiring in September, is the only one of the 10 still newspapering.

World Net Daily, a conservative news compilation site, is doubling down on coverage of the sex assault case involving three young boys, from Iraq and the Sudan, and a 5YO special-needs girl in Twin Falls. The site announced the release of two of the boys with this headline: "Muslim child sex-assault suspects back on the streets of Idaho."

The 14- and 10-year-old boys charged in a sexual assault at Fawnbrook Apartments have been released from juvenile custody, and federal prosecutors are urging the community to stay calm, stop spreading falsehoods about the case and let investigators and court officials do their jobs.

NIC board seeks trustee applications

The North Idaho College Board of Trustees is seeking applications for the pending vacancy that will be created in a week when Trustee Ron Nilson's resignation becomes official. Nilson resigned when a new zone was formed to include Trustee Todd Banducci and him in it. The two live a mile apart. They had opposed a plan that put them in the same zone.

Speaking on a visit to Scotland, Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican candidate, hailed the Brexit vote. According to the Telegraph News, he said the British people had “taken back their independence” and predicted the end of the EU could be “on its way” with other member states fed up with immigrants flowing across “Swiss cheese” borders.
