I'm back from a two-day, mini-vacay in which I helped my two Kootenai County sibs host my brother and sister-in-law who were visiting from central California. The respite paved the way for Super Sub Taryn to test-drive the controls of Huckleberries Online. Taryn did a superb job.

Cruz to appear at fairgrounds 12 

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, battling for delgate victories in Super Tuesday voting, plans to visit North Idaho on Saturday, according to his campaign’s state director. Norm Semanko said he received “official word from the Cruz Campaign” that the Republican presidential hopeful will appear that afternoon at the North Idaho Fairgrounds.

Trump, Clinton poised for big day 

Donald Trump has been projected as the winner of the GOP presidential primaries in Alabama, Massachusetts and Tennessee, a major boost for the billionaire on a night when Trump hopes to seize control of the GOP race. ... In the Democratic race, former secretary of state Hillary Clinton seemed poised to dominate in many of the Super Tuesday states.

Checking out the new Starbucks

My visiting brother, Ed, and I checked out the new Starbucks in Ironwood Square, across from Shopko. I liked it. I'll go back. First, it's roomier than the now vacant spot next to Super Cuts in the Albertson's strip mall to the south. Starbucks has moved into the old brick Schlotzky's sandwich shop on the north side of the Ironwood Square lot.

Why do Evangelicals like Trump? 

Fort Boise points us to an op-ed in the New York Times by Peter Wehner that asks, "What Wouldn't Jesus Do?" Among other things, Wehner sez, Jesus wouldn't vote for Donald Trump (if He voted). And he can't understand why Evangelicals are smitten by him (excluding the host Evangelical of this blog who can't understand Passion for the Trump either).

A collection of letters, photographs and autographs from World War II aviators, from the famous as well as unsung flyboys, sets apart a Spokane woman's hobby from most others. Jill Chandler has been compiling her collection since she graduated from Newport High in 1982. SR columnist Doug Clark writes about the collection today.

Candidates have filed to oppose incumbents Shannon McMillan in House District 7A and Don Cheatham in House District 3B, according to an Eye on Boise blog post. Also, you'll see in the link to Betsy's post that state Sen. Mary Souza and state Rep. Kathy Sims, both R-Coeur d'Alene, have filed with the Secretary of State to run again from District 4.

Memoir captures youthful friendship in snapshots 

Like a collection of pre-Instagram photos with no filters to blur the hard edges, “Learn to Swim” (University of Hell Press, 2015) offers an unsentimental yet moving snapshot of a 10-year friendship. Author Joseph Haeger, 29, was inspired to write the novella-length memoir by the death of his best friend since sixth grade on Thanksgiving Day 2007.

Call this 'common sense act' of 2016 

In his column for Idaho Politics Weekly, Chuck Malloy spotlights a bill that he calls the "Common Sense Act of 2016." SB 1330 requires school districts to establish policies on diabetes self-management in the classrooms. The University of Idaho is analyzing its options for football affiliation following the Sun Belt Conference’s decision to move forward with a 10-team league after the 2017 football season. “We are disappointed by the Sun Belt’s decision,” said Chuck Staben, UI president. In a Lewiston Tribune editorial Monday, Opinion Editor Marty Trillhaase notes that the Who's Who of conservative Republicans voted in the House recently to raise your property taxes, including: Vito Barbieri, Ron Mendive, Don Cheatham & Heather Scott. All voted to eliminate the indexing mechanism from the homeowners exemption.

Malek to seek 3rd term 

State Rep. Luke Malek, the favorite target by Tea Party leaders who don't like his balanced approach to legislating, has announced he will run for a third team from Coeur d'Alene's House District 4. Malek defeated GOPrimary challenger Toby Schindelbeck in a race 2 years ago that was closer than it should have been, thanks to the closed primary.
