I'm sorry to hear about the passing of radio legend John Rook this week. I met John when he was the owner/operator of KCDA-AM, above what is now Moose Lounge at 4th & Sherman. He had gold records and photos of himself and such stars as Kenny Rodgers all around the studio. He talked about his connections with past and present movie stars.

4 Idahoans arraigned in standoff 

Four Idaho residents charged in connection with an armed standoff in Nevada were appointed public defenders during their first federal court appearance on Friday. The Idaho Statesman reports that if they are convicted, Eric James Parker, Steve Arthur Stewart, O. Scott Drexler and Todd Engle could face life sentences.

Edit: Post Falls trustee betrays district 

The Coeur d'Alene Press takes Trustee Carol Goodman of the Post Falls School District for lobbying for an unconstitutional bill to divert public school dollars to private schools. Goodman was one of two Hard Right candidates to win office in 2013. The other has resigned her position. Voters should remember this stand if she seeks re-election.

Craig loses sex-sting case appeal 11 

A federal appeals court says former Sen. Larry Craig of Idaho improperly used campaign funds to pay for his legal defense after his arrest in a 2007 airport bathroom sex sting. The ruling Friday upheld a lower court decision that said Craig must pay the federal government $242,000 for violating election laws.

Faith healer exemption survives 19 

Legislation to remove a legal exemption for parents who believe in faith healing and whose children get seriously ill or die isn’t going anywhere this year. The governor had already asked legislative leaders to name a work group of lawmakers to study the issue after the session, but they haven’t decided whether they will.

In his Carlson Chronicles column today, Chris Carlson says Idaho's 2 US senators -- Jim Risch and Mike Crapo -- are abdicated their duties to serve their constituents. Risch and Crapo have joined other Republicans in saying that they won't hold a hearing or meet with President Obama to discuss a Supreme Court nomination.

Radio legend John Rook 78, RIP 

John Rook was tuned in to the radio industry. Rook, an influential radio programmer in major markets before owning stations here, died on Tuesday of natural causes at his Coeur d'Alene home. He was 78. "John was a legend in the radio world," said longtime friend and Coeur d'Alene attorney John Magnuson.
