Senate OKs online voter registration

For the first time in I don't know how long, the Legislature is in the process of making it easier to vote in Idaho. The Idaho Senate unanimously passed legislation that would allow online voter registration. It's a dollars & cents matter. It costs the state 83 cents to register a voter on paper, about 3 cents to do so online.

Blanchette: Sun Belt doesn't need UI 18

It is past time that the UIdaho acknowledges reality and stops chasing the holy grail of FBS football, columnizes John Blanchette/SR. The Vandal football team just got rejected by the Sun Belt Conference in favor of Coastal Carolina. Rather than look for other options, it's time for the football team to join other UI sports in the Big Sky.

Quotable Quote

"Remember something - we've survived presidential impeachments, assassinations, sex scandals, corruption, war, pestilence, and even the movie Ishtar. We'll survive this primary season. Ah, who am I kidding... we're all screwed. Screwed I say - SCREWED!!"

Whitefish mount Jesus statue to stay in place 12

A statue of Jesus that has spent more than 60 years overlooking a northwestern Montana ski hill is there to stay as an anti-religion group says it will not appeal their case for its removal. In August, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected arguments that placing the statue on USFS land violates the separation of church and state.

In Idaho, it's Trump versus Cruz 25

In a column for the Lewiston Tribune, Chris Carlson/The Carlson Chronicles comments that Idaho spent $2 million in taxpayers dollars so state Republicans could pick between two candidates -- frontrunner Donald Trump and his main challenger, state Sen. Ted Cruz. The GOPrimary will be next week.

'Toxic paternalism' infests Legislature

In his Wedneday edit, Opinion Editor Marty Trillhaase of the Lewiston Tribune comments that state Rep. Heather Scott, R-Blanchard, picked a poor time to try to kill the Idaho Women's Commission. She was upstaged by state Rep. Pete Nielsen of Mountain Home, who dished out the latest doest of "toxic paternalism: that Idaho women have had to endure.

Checking out the new Starbucks

My visiting brother, Ed, and I checked out the new Starbucks in Ironwood Square, across from Shopko. I liked it. I'll go back. First, it's roomier than the now vacant spot next to Super Cuts in the Albertson's strip mall to the south. Starbucks has moved into the old brick Schlotzky's sandwich shop on the north side of the Ironwood Square lot.

Why do Evangelicals like Trump?

Fort Boise points us to an op-ed in the New York Times by Peter Wehner that asks, "What Wouldn't Jesus Do?" Among other things, Wehner sez, Jesus wouldn't vote for Donald Trump (if He voted). And he can't understand why Evangelicals are smitten by him (excluding the host Evangelical of this blog who can't understand Passion for the Trump either).

When Jill Chandler was 18 years old, she started personally writing hundreds of letters to World War II air aces (both German and American) and men who flew on bomber crews asking for details about their experiences and requesting an autographed photo. Over the last 30 years, she has amassed a large collection of photographs and personal letters including one from Marine air ace Pappy Boyington. (Colin Mulvany / The Spokesman-Review)

WWII collection lauds aviation heroes

A collection of letters, photographs and autographs from World War II aviators, from the famous as well as unsung flyboys, sets apart a Spokane woman's hobby from most others. Jill Chandler has been compiling her collection since she graduated from Newport High in 1982. SR columnist Doug Clark writes about the collection today.
