CdA fam gives $1M for med scholarships

A Coeur d’Alene family donated $1 million for scholarships to students attending the University of Washington School of Medicine in Spokane and other programs in the five-state system. The money is part of the Huckabay Family Challenge, which encourages others to endow scholarships, the university said in announcing the donation Wednesday. The family has contributed $7 million total to the scholarship challenge over the past five years. Family spokesman John Huckabay said the family wants to encourage others to support family practice physicians willing to work in small towns and rural areas. “My grandfather, Durward Huckabay, was a rural physican and understood the financial hardships that medical students face,” he said/SR.
