DFO’s Archives: Few R’s hold office

From DFO's Archives (April 21, 1992):

North Idaho's lone Republican legislator counseled GOP candidates in the new District 2 Monday not to fear the northern part of their district in Democratic Bonner County. The rural Bonner County area helped elect Post Falls conservative Cameron Fullmer in the early 1980s before the courts divided North Idaho districts along county boundaries, said retiring Rep. Freeman Duncan of Post Falls.

Duncan also predicted at a Friends of Republicans luncheon for 40 that abortion will emerge as a key issue in this fall's congressional and legislative races along with education funding, affordable health care and term limits. "I tried to be careful with my voting not to hang you all with too much baggage," joked Duncan, who will retire at the end of the year after two terms in the House.

Duncan was the only survivor of four Kootenai County Republican incumbents in 1990 and is one of only three Republican legislators in the 10 northern Idaho counties.

The district runs from the Spokane River northward to the Pend Oreille River and takes in the communities of Westwood, Cocolalla and Careywood.
