TGIF Wild Card 7/14/17 10

Whew! I had quite a day yesterday. Health scare with my 86 year-old mom. A trip to Cheney to cover a special library storytime made difficult by massive roadwork. And you know; blog duty! I'm just really glad it's Friday. How about you?

Chowing down, two miles up

When skydiver Kara Menke asked chef John “J.D.” Leonetti if he’d jump out of an airplane to eat his Voot Burger at 12,500 feet, he didn’t hesitate. The owner of Prohibition Gastropub in Spokane recently had completed only the second skydive of his life when Menke posed the question on the patio of his North Monroe Street restaurant.

Federal regs and small biz: "Enough is enough!" 26

The Office of Advocacy of the Small Business Administration held a regulatory roundtable, Thursday. The president and CEO of Kuma Stoves in Garwood brought a display of two pipes — one 15 times longer than the other — to illustrate the same ratio of how much the EPA has required stove emissions to be reduced in recent years.

Which fish will anglers prefer for Priest Lake?

Anglers attached to fishing Priest Lake tend to fall into two camps that are being asked to make a decision. One group favors a return to the good old days of fishing for abundant kokanee and cutthroat trout. The other group generally prefers the current abundance of delicious shrimp-fed mackinaw. Which would you choose? CH

Raevn DeAugustino, after several years living on the street, stands with her cat Leo in the doorway of a modest basement apartment Wednesday, July 12, 2017. She ran away from home and lived on the Spokane streets, in fear for her safety every day. A recent push by the city of Spokane, with help from SNAP, is putting formerly homeless youth, like DeAugustino, into housing. (Jesse Tinsley / The Spokesman-Review)

Spokane is in the final weeks of a challenge to house 100 homeless young people, ages 12 to 24, in 100 days. King and Pierce counties also are participating, with backing from A Way Home Washington, an advocacy group for homeless youth. DeAugustino is one of 65 young people who have so far found a permanent place to live during the challenge.

Lucas Werner, the 37-year-old Spokane man who made national headlines late last year when he was ejected from a downtown Starbucks after asking a teenage barista on a date, is back on social media, where he offered younger women money to go on a date with him. Would you go on a date with this guy for $1,000? $10,000? CH

Eels slime cars on Oregon highway

So. At least I didn't encounter eel slime on yesterday's drive to Cheney. A truck hauling eels overturned on an Oregon highway, turning the coastal road into a slimy mess. Oregon State Police on Thursday posted a photo on Twitter that showed damaged cars covered by the gooey eels.

The Stranger in the Woods

Whatcha readin'?  25

I finished "All the Light We Cannot See" this weekend. I was sad to close the cover. A remarkably beautifully read. Now, I'm on to "The Stranger in the Woods: The Extraordinary Story of the Last True Hermit," an absolutely riveting true story of a man who lived alone in the Maine woods for 27 years.
