A city of Coeur d'Alene news release:

Planned widening of Government Way between Hanley and Prairie avenues is delayed until spring 2018 due to the current construction bidding climate.

Agency partners working on the major reconstruction project have all agreed to reject the lone bid received from T. LaRiviere, Inc. and seek new bids in the fall, which officials believe will result in a more preferable bidding environment. The lone bidder proposed completion of the work at a cost of $5,667,824. The engineer’s estimate for the project was $4,236,248, or almost 34 percent lower.

This project is a partnership between the cities of Coeur d Alene, Hayden, and Dalton Gardens, Lakes Highway District, and Dalton Water Association and federal funds for the project are being managed by the Local Highway Technical Assistance Council. Partner agencies do not have funding available to make up the difference between existing funds and the high bid.

Improvements include widening of Government Way to two travel lanes in each direction as well as a center turn lane, the addition of sidewalks, bike lanes, new sewer lines, improvements to the Dalton Water Association system and stormwater improvements.

Delay of the project will also enable utility relocations in the corridor to be completed prior to construction, and lessen the amount of construction traffic congestion that is occurring now with numerous other projects this summer.
