My extended 4th of July weekend is going to be filled with family gatherings (on both sides), the downtown parade, fireworks and some more gardening. I'm still filling out my garden as a result of my quick trips to California and Florida in the last 5 weeks. But I'm getting there ...

A Washington connection, too?

We all know of the Canadian connection that put Mike "Landslide" Kennedy over the top by 3 votes over Jim Brannon in the infamous Coeur d'Alene City Council election race back when. But it appears that there might be a Washington connection, too. Terry Werner of Post Falls spotted this sign in the Liberty Lake area and posted in on Facebook.

Archives: North to Alaska

The annals of my Huckleberries column 25 years ago had a nugget about my next-door neighbor who was miffed when he had to sit through three light changes at a Coeur d'Alene traffic light.

Q: Are you a snake phobic, too?

4th of July starts early

I enjoy fireworks. Mrs. O and I watch the chamber fireworks from City Beach on the Fourth of July. We enjoy the neighborhood fireworks while riding to and from the community fireworks show. But I don't have much use for the clowns who shoot them off before and after the Fourth of July, as a neighbor did last evening. How about you?

Which podcasts interest you?

I've begun listening to podcasts with on my iPhone. Usually, I listen to them while I walk during the lunch hour or while watering the garden during the evenings. '50 Shades' popular in Spokane

Like the rest of the nation, Spokane was obsessed with “Fifty Shades of Grey” a few years ago. Spokane Library circulation records say the e-book was borrowed a total of 696 times in 2012 and the total number of checkouts for the trilogy was 1,677. But the hard-bound copy of the book, for some reason, wasn't as popular. (Q: Have you read the book?)
