Huckleberries Past — 2.20.1989

Sandy Emerson, shown here in an SR file photo, launched Leadership Coeur d'Alene in 1985 as manager of the Coeur d'Alene Chamber of Commerce. I was part of that first class. From Kootenai Grapevine/Huckleberries of Feb. 20, 1989:

Watch for more women to take leadership roles in the community soon. For the first time, females comprise a majority of the Leadership Coeur d'Alene class. In fact, women make up two-thirds of the recently selected class of 1989, 15 of 23 spots. "We didn't start out with a quota," said chamber manager Gary Schulz. "It was a pleasure to interview a class and have so many quality women." There were only four women of 19 enrolled in the class of 1985, the one I attended in the program's first year: the Heart Association's Betty Doran, banker Marlys Rogers, Job Service's Betty Kerr and Jacklin Seed's Marilyn Deutsch. Also, this year's class has only three bankers and one attorney. The program certainly has come a long way.
