I've begun reading an advance copy of Jon Mueller's history of Coeur d'Alene City Park: "Private Park, Public Park." But it's much more than a history of one of the city's favorite pieces of public ground. The history of City Park pulls back the curtain on how things came to be in Coeur d'Alene.

KEA, 1st graders protect Fernan Lake

The Kootenai Environmental Alliance have teamed with Fernan STEM Academy to teach first-graders the importance of protecting local waterways. As part of their water and wildlife studies, the first-graders will participate in a field trip to the west end of Fernan Lake next Tuesday.

North Idaho College has an offer for you that you can't refuse, if you're looking for a way to celebrate Mother's Day this Sunday -- a free concert at 2 p.m. Sunday in Boswell Hall Schuler Performing Arts Center. The NIC Wind Symphony and NIC Chamber Singers will perform in what will be the last concert for band director Terry Jones.

Transit Center moves ahead 

Kootenai County Commissioner Chris Fillios tells Huckleberries that he has no plans to change his mind re: a vote in January to move ahead with the Riverstone Citylink Transit Center, despite pressure from Brent Regan and the Kootenai County Republican Central Committee. Nor does he know of plans for reconsideration of the county position.

Lt. Gov. Brad Little kicked things off in the GOP race for the guv nomination this morning with a website and tweet needling new rival Raul Labrador. The tweet includes an enticing scenic picture of Idaho, with the heading across the middle, “After Years in Washington D.C. WELCOME BACK, RAUL! We can help you find your way around Idaho!”

Schindler Foundation to get jury panel donations 

Kootenai County Clerk Jim Brannon has announced that the jury panel donations ($10 per day, I believe) will now go to the Anna Schindler Foundation, a small charity whose mission is to support families battling childhood cancer. The donations, freely offered by jurors, formerly went to Heritage Health.

The ignite cda board of directors will discuss the old Atlas Mill site during a special call meeting at 4 p.m. today in the Coeur d'Alene Chamber of Commerce/Coeur d'Alene Mines conference room. The city of Coeur d'Alene is moving ahead with plans to purchase the 47-acre Atlas Mill/IFI/Stimson Lumber Co. site.

In a guest opinion, U.S. Sen. Mike Crapo welcomes an executive order by President Donald Trump, calling for a review of all National Monuments approved since 1996 that exceed 100,000 acres or didn't get adequate public review: "Americans deserve to enjoy a variety of benefits from our nation's ... public lands," Crapo said.

Hagadone named tourism champion

Duane Hagadone, who has invested in marine, golf, restaurant, newspaper and hospitality businesses including the iconic Coeur d'Alene Resort, was named the Coeur d'Alene Chamber of Commerce's 2017 recipient of the Kyle M. Walker Champion of Tourism Award on Tuesday at the nonprofit's Upbeat Breakfast at The Resort.
