Bogus. That’s the word Jeff Selle, of Post Falls, uses for that $175 citation issued by a Spokane County health inspector to Riverside High mom Mary Beth Conklin for a fundraising tailgater. Selle? He’s a top regional
barbecuer, handling the tongs for Bent BBQ at several North Idaho events, including the third annual St. Vincent de Paul Steak Fry this summer. Specifically, Jeff tells Huckleberries: “In Idaho you can cook a charity fundraiser without having to purchase a permit, at all. And, if you are vending or catering for profit, you only pay $80 for a yearlong permit.” Spokane charges $480 for a permit, whether charitable or not. Again, Jeff: “The fee is supposed to cover the cost of inspection. You can’t tell me it costs $480 to inspect one of these events. It takes all of 15 minutes to check the wash stations, hot-holding and cold-holding system. I know because I have been inspected several times”/DFO, SR Huckleberries. More here.
SR weekend columns:
Tree Top has chosen Spokane Fire Station No. 13 as the winner of America’s Best Firehouse Barbecue Cook-off.
Firehouse cook Tony Yuen and his Puleihu BBQ Sauce were selected by a panel of judges for the top prize and a $10,000 donation for the station.
Station No. 13 will use the donation to buy equipment and supplement the station’s benevolent fund, which assists needy firefighters and family members facing medical hardships or other problems. Lorie Hutson, SR
Where did you eat the best barbecue?
I sustained the most serious grilling injury of my long and illustrious barbecuing career over the weekend when a chicken tender flared up and singed my hair. I needn’t tell you that this near-tragedy really brought home the dangers of gas grills and tequila-based marinades. So naturally I went to George Mason University’s stats.org website — the oracle of indispensible statistical information on the Internet — to find out how close I came to losing an eyebrow. Here’s what I learned: Your risk of being involved in a nonfatal grilling accident is 1 in 86,830 — but 1 in 66,191 if you’re a guy. Kids 9 and under are at the greatest risk — 1 in 41,239, or 1 in 33,509 for boys alone/Steve Crump, Twin Falls Times-News. More here. (SR file illustration)
Question: Have you ever been injured while BBQing?
Arpie:
I hope to hear a complete and thorough accounting of the (Smokin’ the Coeur d’Alenes) BBQ event this weekend. I didn’t make it. Anyone know how things went? How did Bent do? My favorite home brew Laughing Dog was there. I hope Bent got to spend some time with Fred. I heard of the possibility of tens of thousands of people. That seemed high. How many folks were there? I heard people that paid to get in didn’t get to eat the good stuff. What did they eat?
Question: Bent, do you have a report about the big barbecue at the fairgrounds, for you HucksOnline fans?
JimmyMac has issued a Barbecue challenge. Bent and Mia have signed on. Any other takers? This could be legendary.
JIMMYMAC on May 22 at 12:34 p.m.
I smell a HBO BBQ challenge coming on. Let me know if any of you want a shot at the title.
I’m game for a BBQ challenge JimmyMac.
I am with Mia … Bring. It. On. Baa. Bee.And it better be you’re “A Game” because I am known in BBQ circles. Hey, maybe we could tie in a BBQ cook-off with the beer tasting at Taryn’s studio on June 20th! I was just going to BBQ some snacks for that event, but a cook-off would be blast…
Is anyone else game for that? I’ll bring my charcoal BBQ/smoker, and I’ll even throw on some portabellas for the stickman.
Taryn Hecker on May 24 at 10:00 a.m.
Thanks for the heads up, Bent. I’ve been waitressing all weekend so not been online all that much. (For anyone looking for some good eats this holiday weekend check out Spirit Lake’s Fireside. Only open holiday weekends. I’ll be there honing my waitress skills some more). I’ve rounded up a few more folks who are planning to be here on June 20 and I’ll have the studio up and running for anyone who wants to partake in some portrait specials. I’ll have some appetizers and some vegetarian salads to go with or without the bbq fare and some non-alcoholic beverages. This is gonna be a blast :)
Memorial Day weekend is traditionally when folks fire up their barbecues for their first time. Not us. We bbq all year long. Well, except for this year when the grill got buried beneath several feet of snow. That put a crimp in the cookouts.
So what will be on your grill this weekend?
* Hamburgers
* Hot Dogs
* Steak
* Chicken
