Petrino: Chalich’s Still My No. 1 QB

With Idaho's offense sputtering through the first two weeks of the season, coach Paul Petrino said he'll continue to platoon redshirt freshman Chad Chalich and junior Josh McCain at quarterback. But he also made clear who's atop the depth chart. “Chad’s the starter. Josh is just going to come in and play,” Petrino said. Petrino said McCain, a junior-college transfer, gave the Vandals a nice spark with his legs in a 42-10 loss at Wyoming. Chalich, meanwhile, “played really well” in the fourth quarter, the first-year coach said. The Coeur d'Alene native has completed 41 of 59 passes (69.5 percent) this season, but Petrino reinforced that he and McCain have taken too many sacks and “both made silly mistakes”/Josh Wright, SR. Choate: UI Should Quit Playing LSUs

In an Q-and-A interview with Ryan Collingwood/VarsityCDA, Jeff Choate, a former Post Falls High football coach who now coaches linebackers at Washington State, said:

I think Idaho prep football has really improved, and a lot of that has carried over from Boise State’s success. As for North Idaho, when I was growing up, it had a reputation of having tough, hard-working kids.  But I think that’s shifted over the years. I mean, how do you preach toughness to a bunch of kids from Dalton Gardens? Just the name itself sounds (fancy). …Last year Coeur d’Alene was as good as any team in the western Untied States. And (former CdA quarterback Chad) Chalich is a solid player. We had a lot of conversations on what we should do with him at Boise State, but we ended up getting another commit and Chalich ended up at Idaho. When Idaho does what it should and play at the FCS level (Big Sky Conference) I think Chalich will be an all-American player and Walter Payton Award candidate. …It’s really not right what (Idaho) is doing to its players in letting them get beat so they can get a paycheck. Chalich, Watson To Become Vandals

Chad Chalich and Deon Watkins (shown above during 2011 season), the pass-catch team that led the Coeur d'Alene Vikings to their second straight Idaho high school football title last fall, have signed letters of intent, as expected, to play for the University of Idaho Vandals. You can see who else Coach Robb Akey signed here.

  • Akey on Chalich: “Chad’s a winner. He’s a great competitor. He’s a two-time state champion quarterback. We’re very excited to have the best quarterback in the state of Idaho in our football program. We’re very excited about his future.”
  • Akey on Watson: “Deon is a tremendous athlete. We recruited him as an athlete – he can play tight end or defensive end. We’re going to see what spot fits him best. He’s going to be able to play basketball, too. His daddy (Deon) was a tremendous basketball player here.”
  • Akey comments on all recruits here.

Question: Are you looking forward to rooting for two former Viks on UI Vandal football team?

Vik QB Chalich Commits To UIdaho

Coeur d’Alene High quarterback Chad Chalich gave Idaho head coach Robb Akey an oral commitment Sunday night to accept a scholarship offer to play for the Vandals, Vikings coach Shawn Amos said. Chalich, who led the Vikings to the 5A state championship, had a home visit with Akey on Sunday night and committed, Amos said. Chalich, the reigning 5A All-Idaho Player of the Year accounted for five of Coeur d’Alene’s seven touchdowns, passing for 410 yards and running for 57 more in the Vikings' 49-28 victory against Eagle at Bronco Stadium earlier this month. Amos also said that wide receiver Deon Watson also had a home visit with Akey and is taking an official visit to the Idaho campus next weekend/Idaho Statesman.

Question: Was Chad Chalich wise in picking a scholarship from Idaho over a walk-on invite from Boise State?

Vik QB Wins 5A Player Of Year Honors

It only took Chad Chalich one season to coax enough votes out of Idaho’s 5A football coaches to earn player of the year honors. He hopes to validate those votes next season. “I have another year to prove that I deserved this honor,” said Chalich, who was a backup last year. “It’s exciting.” Coeur d’Alene coach Shawn Amos said the junior quarterback set single-season school records for total offense (3,385 yards), passing yards (2,844), completions (209), passing touchdowns (32) and scoring (232, 192 from passing TDs). He tied a single-game school record with five touchdown passes against Sandpoint on Sept. 24/Jesse Zentz, Idaho Statesman. More here.
