Downtown CdA Bar Report — 2.3.12

Wanna know why I stay away from downtown Coeur d'Alene after hours? Check out this battery report from 10:15 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22: “Officers responded to the Eagles Club (209 E. Sherman) for a battery call involving two males and a female at a wedding party. According to the female victim (33 years), she was having a conversation with several people about religion, and the suspect male (31 years) did not like what she had to say. At one point, the female’s husband, a 33 year old male, stood behind her and said “hi” to the suspect who in return (for unknown reasons) punched him in the face three times causing him to fall to the ground and loose consciousness. When the suspect began walking away, the female followed him asking, “What in the hell did you do that for?” and when she was near the top of the stairs, the suspect male either grabbed or pushed her causing her to fall down 4-5 stairs causing lacerations on her legs, bruising, rug burns and a bump on the head.” A lot of battery & some serious injury in latest Bar Report here.

Kralicek Shooting Anniversary Passes

I didn't realize another anniversary of the near-fatal shooting of former Coeur d'Alene police officer Mike Kralicek had almost passed until I read this Facebook post from Mike's wife, Carrie, last night: “It has been 7 years today since K57 was “down”. Our lives changed for what “appeared” to be the worst. Things are not always as they appear to be and what appears to be is not always what it seems. We have found peace and joy through the suffering, and an understanding you cannot have one without the other. I love you K57 you are more than a number. I love the new Mike and what you can do for others through honestly and openly speaking to agencies about officer involved shootings, overcoming adversity, and disability etc. You are still a HERO and one of a kind.” (2006 SR file photo: Mike Kralicek and then state senator Mike Jorgenson)

Question: Any shoutouts for Mike, Carrie, & their family?

Police Investigate Bold Burglaries

The Coeur d’Alene Police Department is working with area agencies to fully investigate a series of burglaries that have occurred in the City and County. These burglaries have a similar pattern of taking place in the day time hours with suspects brazenly kicking open doors to residences. … On Nov. 9 a resident reported he was home alone at 1000 block of W. Fallview Drive at approximately 2:15 pm.. The reporting party said two suspects, a male and a female, knocked and rang the doorbell multiple times. The reporting party was home alone and decided not to answer the door. The male suspect pulled some keys out of his pocket, and tried to open the front door. The victim heard this, and locked the dead bolt to the door. The male suspect looked through the half-moon shaped window on top of the front door and saw the victim. Both suspects then fled the scene/Sgt. Christie Wood, Coeur d'Alene Police Department. More here.

Question: Have you seen suspicious people knocking on doors in your neighborhood?

Fired Ex-CPD Blue Wins Lawsuit

Item: Ex police officer wins wrongful termination suit/Tom Hasslinger, Coeur d'Alene Press.

More Info: A former Coeur d'Alene police officer was awarded more than $3 million on Wednesday in a wrongful termination suit against the city of Coeur d'Alene. According to the tort claim records in federal court, Daniel Dixon, a 17-year-veteran of the force, was terminated after the department finished a six-month investigation into allegations he tampered with a subordinate officer's work schedule and cheated on his own time card. City legal representatives said Dixon was demoted after the internal investigation found Dixon had been guilty of the allegations, and that the officer stopped showing up for work after that.

CdA To Target Abandoned Vehicles

During the week of Nov. 7-11, Coeur d’Alene police will be looking for abandoned vehicles. Vehicles in violation will be tagged for 48-hour removal. If the vehicles are not moved in the allotted time, they will be towed. Prior to towing, attempts to locate the owners will be made. In the event owners cannot be located, not only will the vehicle be tagged, there will also be a letter left on the vehicle explaining the importance of removal. If a citizen reports an abandoned vehicle, all those reports will be followed up by the police department. Why all the special attention for abandoned vehicles now? As the winter season approaches, these vehicles can be a problem. Not only are they an eyesore, they can cause traffic problems and collisions, and make it difficult for ambulances and fire engines to access portions of neighborhoods in the event of an emergency/Victoria Bruno, Coeur d'Alene Today. More here.

Question: Do you have any abandoned vehicles in your neighborhood?

Cops, Fire Back Sayler, 2 Incumbents

Local public safety unions have endorsed three men running for the Coeur d'Alene City Council this fall — former legislator George Sayler, and incumbents John Bruning and Ron Edinger. A billboard supporting Sayler and Bruning is currently standing at Northwest Boulevard & Lakewood (by Lake City Senior Center). The billboard is sponsored by Coeur d'Alene firefighters, Coeur d'Alene police officers, and the Kootenai County Deputy Sheriff's Association. HucksOnline hears that Edinger asked not to be on the billboard because he didn't want to appear to be running on a ticket with Bruning & Sayler. HucksOnline hears the billboard is viewed by some as a lucky charm, since it was used by Mayor Sandi Bloem and NIC Trustee Judy Meyer during their election runs.

DFO: Can someone snap a photo of the billboard for HucksOnline?

18YO In Jail, Bledsoe Bike Recovered

The Coeur d'Alene Police Department has provided a photo of Drew Bledsoe's recovered bike.

An 18YO Coeur d'Alene man has been charged with grand theft for allegedly stealing ex-NFL quarterback Drew Bledsoe's bike over the Labor Day weekend. Brandon C. Edgemon (pictured) was in jail on another charge at the time Coeur d'Alene police found the bike and filed charges against him last Thursday. According to police reports, a 15YO boy told police that Edgemon asked the boy's sister at about 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 5, if she would “watch the bike for me because the police are looking for it.” The boy's sister told him what happened and that the bike was in bushes across the street. Edgemon was upset that the boy locked the bike in his garage and called police. Coeur d'Alene police contacted Bledsoe and made arrangements to return his bike to him. The bike wasn't damaged. Bledsoe and his family had been dining friends during a visit to Coeur d'Alene when the bike was stolen. Complete police report.

Christa Busted For Speeding

A funny thing happened to Christa Hazel, new VP for the Bryan Elementary PTA, on the way to school Wednesday morning — she got popped by CPD Blue Pat Sullivan for speeding 11 mph over limit @ 11th & Harrison (not a school zone). At which point she had the choice of a $85 ticket that would go on her record and would be considered by her insurance company. Or a $75 ticket plus 3-hour traffic school with the ticket not reported to insurance.  She was forced to make the choice on the spot, with a bus load of children passing by with their little faces pressed against the windows, waving. She picked the traffic school, taught by Officer Nick Knoll. The traffic school, Christa told Huckleberries, provides plenty of insight about what our CDA PD encounters while on traffic patrol. Christa was “classmates” with her best friend, Angie Phillips, who was also popped for going 11 mph over the speed limit recently. Believe it or not, The two once attended a NASCAR-type racing school for a week. Adding insult to injury, Christa's children begged her not to tell hubby Joel about the ticket until they returned from school to witness the spectacle. Question: When did you last get a speeding ticket?
