Viks, Skyline Set For Dream Game

The Coeur d’Alene football team’s 2012 schedule already was going to be the toughest in school history. Now it’s been amped up another notch. It will be a clash of the Idaho and Washington big-school state champions when the Skyline Spartans of Sammamish take on the Coeur d’Alene Vikings as part of a quadrupleheader at the Kibbie Dome on Sept. 15. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. Skyline originally was scheduled to play host to Manatee of Bradenton, Fla., in a matchup between two of the nation’s top quarterbacks. But the game was scrapped when the marketing company that helped arrange the game couldn’t afford to fly Manatee to Washington. CdA athletic director Todd Gilkey received an email from Skyline’s administration Wednesday confirming it planned to play CdA pending final approval from its school board. Skyline is led by senior-to-be, 6-foot-5 Max Browne, who has given an oral commitment to the University of Southern California. Browne is rated the nation’s No. 2 recruit/Greg Lee, SR.

Question: Do you think you might see this dream matchup between the 2011 Idaho & Washington state high school champion football teams?

KT: Vik Fans Behave Badly At Game

But the score of the game (51-48 in favor of Coeur d'Alene) has nothing to do with why I feel disappointed and somewhat embarrassed by my alma mater. The student section for the Vikings was filled with fans dressed in what could be described as hillbilly attire, holding aloft a sea of red plastic cups. In fact at least twice, maybe three times the PA system played the currently popular country drinking song, Red Solo Cup. Some of the taunts from the Viking section to the Trojan players were offensive at best. When the buzzer sounded at the end of the game the entire CHS student section, maybe 100 strong, rushed the court under the basket in celebration. Which wouldn't have been a problem had there not still been three Post Falls players on the court and caught in the throng. At least a couple punches were thrown/Kerri Thoreson, Coeur d'Alene Press. More here.

Question: Was the behavior of the Coeur d'Alene High student section acceptable, considering the rivalry between the two schools?

Lee: Viks Title Top INW Prep Story

Greg Lee, the top prep scribe in the Inland Northwest, picks the undefeated run of the Coeur d'Alene Viks to a second consecutive state football title as the top 2011 high school story in the Inland Northwest. Writes Greg: “The Vikings were simply overpowering – in an athletic and speedy way as they finished undefeated at 12-0 and captured back-to-back State 5A championships. The Vikings may have been not only the best team in Idaho but perhaps Washington. CdA defeated Skyview of Vancouver 52-14, and Skyview went on to play perennial power Skyline in the state final. Quarterback Chad Chalich, who has given an oral commitment to Idaho, passed for 3,641 yards and 42 touchdowns with just two interceptions in 331 attempts. He also rushed for 471 yards and 14 TDs.” You can read the Top 5 list here.

Vik QB Chalich Commits To UIdaho

Coeur d’Alene High quarterback Chad Chalich gave Idaho head coach Robb Akey an oral commitment Sunday night to accept a scholarship offer to play for the Vandals, Vikings coach Shawn Amos said. Chalich, who led the Vikings to the 5A state championship, had a home visit with Akey on Sunday night and committed, Amos said. Chalich, the reigning 5A All-Idaho Player of the Year accounted for five of Coeur d’Alene’s seven touchdowns, passing for 410 yards and running for 57 more in the Vikings' 49-28 victory against Eagle at Bronco Stadium earlier this month. Amos also said that wide receiver Deon Watson also had a home visit with Akey and is taking an official visit to the Idaho campus next weekend/Idaho Statesman.

Question: Was Chad Chalich wise in picking a scholarship from Idaho over a walk-on invite from Boise State?

Viks Complete 2011 Season Perfect

Chad Chalich will get his right foot fitted for a cast today and miss the first month of the basketball season. This after playing one final football game Friday when the Coeur d’Alene senior quarterback led the Vikings, top-ranked all season, to a repeat State 5A championship. Chalich, who is finally receiving some late interest from colleges, passed for 410 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 60 and two more scores as the Vikings handled the Eagle Mustangs 49-28 at Boise State University’s Bronco Stadium. A week after suffering a hairline fracture on the outside of his foot in the second quarter of a semifinal victory, Chalich made it a light week at practice so he would be ready to go in the title game. Just as important as all the yards and touchdowns were two big punts, both with his right foot, of 59 and 60 yards/Greg Lee, SR. More here. Coeur d’Alene Viks Repeat As Champs

Viks Meet Eagle For Title Tonight

Kerri Thoreson and talented Coeur d'Alene High QB Chad Chalich, who is wrapping up a successful career for the Viks met at KVNI HQ recently.

Standing in the way of Coeur d’Alene High and a second straight state 5A football championship tonight is a team with a talented quarterback, a high-powered offense and a strong, but underrated, defense. Sound familiar? “I think they’re similar to us,” Coeur d’Alene coach Shawn Amos said of Eagle. “They have a very good defense that has been overshadowed by their good offense.” Coeur d’Alene (11-0) and Eagle (10-1) collide tonight in the state title game at 6 p.m. PST at Bronco Stadium in Boise/Mark Nelke, Coeur d'Alene Press. More here.

Question: Feel free to predict the final score.

Mother Nature, Capital Can’t Stop Viks

No one has been able to slow Coeur d’Alene High School’s dynamic passing game all fall. So Mother Nature took her shot Friday night. And like all of those who tried before, she failed, as the No. 1-ranked and unbeaten Vikings weathered cold temperatures, strong winds and a persistent, driving rain to roll past visiting Capital 37-7 in the semifinals of the State 5A football playoffs. The lopsided win moved the defending state champion Vikings (11-0) into Friday’s 6 p.m. final at Bronco Stadium in Boise, where they will defend their title against Eagle, a 42-21 winner over Highland in Friday’s other semifinal. “It bothered everybody,” CdA coach Shawn Amos said of the nasty weather conditions, “but our kids found a way to succeed. We have good football players, and they were excited to play in the rain and mud/Steve Bergum, SR. More here. (SR file photo of Coeur d'Alene QB Chad Chalich)

Coeur d’Alene Viks Crack Top 25

That first-round playoff win over Mountain View Friday has pushed the Coeur d'Alene High Viks into the national Top 25 poll of USA Today. Don Bosco Prep of Ramsey, N.J., is ranked No. 1 in the national poll of high school football teams. Bellevue High in Washington (at No. 13) and Sheldon High of Eugene, Ore., are the only other Northwest prep teams in the Top 25. Full list here.

Booster’s Top 10 List Rips Moscow

Chris Costa, Coeur d'Alene Booster Club president, has created a hubbub from Bonners Ferry to Moscow by emailing around this Top 10 list (a la David Letterman) re: reasons Moscow decided to play Coeur d'Alene Friday:

  • 9. Got tired of TV news reporters showing up at their school!
  • 8. Players are hoping to get a Chad Chalich autograph
  • 7. Nothing else to do that weekend, most of the players already got their elk
  • 6. Just got beat by Bonners Ferry … how could it get any worse?
  • 5. Want to see if they can beat Sandpoint’s record of points allowed
  • Rest of the list here

Question: Can you add to the list?

Will Moscow Face Viks For Homecoming?

The Coeur d'Alene High School Vikings football teams has racking up a 5-0 record so far this season, but some parents of their next opponent - the Moscow Bears - are concerned about their kids' safety. The Vikings are one of the top ranked teams in the state and are coming off an 88-12 shellacking of Sandpoint last week. They've been gearing up for their homecoming game against the Moscow Bears next week but have hit a roadblock. Some parents in Moscow are concerned about their kids' safety; they say it's not about the threat of losing the game; rather it comes down to the size of the two teams. Moscow has fewer players which would mean fewer substitutes, and some parents think that's just going to lead to injured players/Anusha Roy, KXLY. More here. Click below to see video …

Question: Do you think Moscow was so caught up in its controversy with Coeur d'Alene that it forgot to bring its A Game to Friday contest w/smaller Bonners Ferry?

Moscow Reluctant To Play Viks

Huckleberries hears — and sports scribe Greg Lee has confirmed — that 4A Moscow is trying to back out of its game at 5A Coeur d'Alene a week from tomorrow Friday. It was going to be CdA's homecoming game. Greg Lee is on the phone now to a Coeur d'Alene High source who sez several Moscow High players told their coach that they'd refuse to get on the bus for the Coeur d'Alene game. Lee tells HucksOnline that the entire team numbers 26 players. The Moscow coach has said he wants to play the game if he can field 11 players. Moscow hasn't given Coeur d'Alene a final answer yet. CdA is scrambling to find game. According to a HucksOnline source: “Moscow has said that they do not want to play CHS in the homecoming game at CHS. … Through the grapevine, I have heard that it is the moscow parents that don't want the kids playing against CHS, they don't want them getting beat up for the rest of the season.” Seems Moscow is wary of the Viks after Coeur d'Alene's 88-12 victory over host Sandpoint Friday.

Vik Wrestlers Repeat As State Champions

There are no game-winning field goals in wrestling, no buzzer-beating jump shots nor walk-off home runs. But on Saturday afternoon at the Idaho Center, Coeur d’Alene senior Caleb Davis got a chance to be the hero. As he and Caldwell senior Tim Hartwig took the mat for their 189-pound final, each knew what was at stake: After more than 400 matches, the race for the 5A team championship had come down to this. “I knew,” Davis said. “I was just trying to stay calm.” Hartwig had the upper hand early, but Davis rallied for a second-round pin, setting off a wild Coeur d’Alene celebration. “I don’t even know how it happened,” Davis said. “I just smelled blood in the water and went for it.” Davis’ victory gave the Vikings 205 points, just enough to hold off Caldwell (1981/2)/Jordan Rodriguez, special to The Spokesman-Review. Lewiston Stops CdA For 5A Girls Title

Lewiston's Karlee Wilson (2) strips the ball away from Coeur d' Alene's Kyeli Parker (12) during the first half in the 5A Girls State Championship high school basketball game tonight in Nampa. The Bengals are state champions for the first time since 1976. Last year, Lewiston returned to the state tournament for the first time since 1989 and lost to Coeur d'Alene in the final. Coeur d'Alene's attempt to win a fourth state tournament fell short, leaving Meridian (1980-83) as the only program that has accomplished that feat in girls basketball/Jesse Zentz, Idaho Statesman. Viks Seek 4th Straight Girls State Title

Lewiston (21-3) will play three-time reigning champion Coeur d’Alene (20-5) — a 56-36 winner against Highland — in a rematch of last year’s championship game at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Idaho Center. “Every year, you expect to reach the state tournament, and it takes a lot of work to get there,” Coeur d’Alene coach Dale Poffenroth said. “Once you get there, if you don’t win, it’s a big letdown because you know how much work it took.” This will mark the fifth consecutive year a team from northern Idaho will claim the title. Centennial won in 2006, but Lake City won in 2007 and Coeur d’Alene has dominated ever since. “We’ve got a good team, but we’ll see what happens,” said Lewiston coach Pat Teichmer, whose team has beaten Coeur d’Alene twice this season. “We’ve asked our kids to jump one hurdle at a time and we have one more big one in front of us”/Jesse Zentz, Idaho Statesman. More here.

Question: When did you last see a high school girls basketball game?

Vik QB Wins 5A Player Of Year Honors

It only took Chad Chalich one season to coax enough votes out of Idaho’s 5A football coaches to earn player of the year honors. He hopes to validate those votes next season. “I have another year to prove that I deserved this honor,” said Chalich, who was a backup last year. “It’s exciting.” Coeur d’Alene coach Shawn Amos said the junior quarterback set single-season school records for total offense (3,385 yards), passing yards (2,844), completions (209), passing touchdowns (32) and scoring (232, 192 from passing TDs). He tied a single-game school record with five touchdown passes against Sandpoint on Sept. 24/Jesse Zentz, Idaho Statesman. More here. AM: Viks Bop Centennial For Title

Coeur d’Alene High quarterback Chad Chalich passes the ball against Centennial during an Idaho state high school state championship football game on Thursday at the Kibbie Dome on UI’s campus in Moscow. After leading 14-7 at half, the Viks defense stopped Centennial cold in the second half en route to a 28-7 Milk Bowl victory. Greg Lee’s story here. (SR photo: Tyler Tjomsland)

Viks Capture 5A Football Title 28-7

“You can’t describe it,” (coach Shawn) Amos said. “This was 14 years in the process. I went from the worst team in the state probably (his first year) to one of the best teams in the state – from start to (now).” CdA (11-1) did it with lock-down defense. After the Viks allowed Centennial running back Mike Kirby 106 yards on 19 carries in the first half, they stuffed him in the second. Kirby had just 8 yards on nine attempts the final two quarters. “Hands down they were solid all the way around,” CdA running back Zach Keiser said of the defense. “Stopped them on fourth down two or three times. They kept us in the game for sure and finally our offense started to put up some points”/Greg Lee, SR. More here.

Viks Play For 5A Title Tonight

The top-ranked Coeur d’Alene Vikings were understandably excited after upending the second-ranked Capital Eagles last week in the semifinals of the state 5A high school football playoffs, but Vikings coach Shawn Amos knew one thing was missing. “A lot of people were talking like the semifinal was the final, but we didn’t get a trophy after the game,” Amos said. A trophy will indeed be awarded tonight, when Coeur d’Alene (10-1) faces fourth-ranked Centennial (9-2) at 7 p.m. at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow in the state championship game/Mark Nelke, Coeur d’Alene Press. More here. (SR file photo: CdA’s Joe Roletto knocks down a long pass in a game earlier this year against Post Falls)

Question: Who will win tonight’s game? Why?

Final: Coeur d’Alene 28, Capital 24

A special play on special teams has the Coeur d’Alene High football team in position to win its first state championship since 1985. Talented offenses, aggressive defenses and experienced coaches traded punches all afternoon during Saturday’s 5A state semifinal at Bronco Stadium. But the outcome was swayed by huge plays on special teams, including a late blocked punt by Vikings senior Drew Turbin that led to the winning touchdown in a 28-24 Coeur d’Alene victory. Coeur d’Alene (10-1) plays Centennial (9-2) for the title next weekend at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow. “They were blocking down pretty hard after we got the first (punt),” Turbin said. “I just came hard from the outside and got a hand on the ball”/Jordan Rodriguez, Special to the SR.
