Newt Gingrich sent a letter Monday to an influential Iowa social conservative group affirming his commitment to marital fidelity and commitment to enforce the Defense of Marriage Act as president. The letter, published on The Family Leader’s website, is Gingrich’s response to the group’s Marriage Vow, a pledge signed by several other Republican presidential candidates that Gingrich had previously declined to sign. Gingrich pledged in the letter to “to uphold the institution of marriage through personal fidelity to my spouse and respect for the marital bonds of others”/Alicia M. Cohn, The Hill. More here.
Question: What do you think of Newt Gingrich's pledge?
President Obama has instructed the Justice Department to stop defending the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act, which has since 1996 banned federal recognition of same-sex unions. The announcement was made in a letter from Attorney General Eric Holder to congressional leaders in relation to two lawsuits, Pedersen v. OPM and Windsor v. United States, which challenge a section of DOMA that defines marriage for federal purposes as only between one man and one woman. Obama “has made the determination,” Holder wrote, that Section 3 “as applied to same-sex couples who are legally married under state law, violates the equal protection component of the Fifth Amendment”/ABC News. Question: Do you support the decision by the Obama administration to stop defending the Defense of Marriage Act, which bans the recognition of same-sex unions?

More Info: A federal district court judge in Boston today struck down the 1996 federal law that defines marriage as a union exclusively between a man and a woman. Judge Joseph L. Tauro ruled that the federal Defense of Marriage law violates the Constitutional right of married same-sex couples to equal protection under the law and upends the federal government’s long history of allowing states to set their own marriage laws.
Question: Do you agree/disagree with this ruling?
